Craigs List attracts too many scam artists, etc. in any country. I have had experience in this regard in the U.S and in Colombia. Short term=airbnb is what I have used. Long term-it depends on the country you're in.

Colombia: Shortish term housing in Ibague:

You will find your best buys by signs posted in windows by the property owners. It might take a bit longer, but in the end...you'll deal directly with the owner and save dinero.

Ecuador: Hoit Water ?:

I recently spent a week in Mahala, in a rented condo; but there was no hot water available period. Also, I visited some newly-built condos=same thing, no hot water heaters. So, someone please answer this question for me...Are there no hot water heaters in condos, apts. in Machala ?
