Portugal: Selecting a bank & transferring money:
I agree about Transferwise. I have two banks in the US and also one in PT (Novo Banco).
I found TFW is the fastest and cheapest for me. It certainly is easy and convenient, especially compared to going to a bank and filling out forms.
I didn't shop around for a bank but was pleased with the extra services I received from NB. Things like they will send a Doctor and a repairman to your house one time a year for free (I found many of the services banks offer strange compared to the US).
Also online access being is very clear which is important for me.
You may want to see what bank has branches near where you will be living as well as check ATM (multibank) fees.

So glad to hear you found a doctor during the holidays, and even more glad to hear Binkie is on the mend!
Portugal: Best month:
We always tried to go in the hottest month and the coldest month so we could have an idea of what to expect. February and late summer gave us a good representation and also we were able to see what it was like with and without tourists. This worked well for the area we were looking, not sure if it would pertain to the place your are considering.

This was a good answer.

Sent you a PM
Portugal: Mail from the US:
I tried searching and didn't come up with anything related. Maybe I'm phrasing it wrong. We're beginning to make a list of all mail we receive here in the states via the post office, and move everything/anything online. We've already got a good start as most, but not everything is already set up that way. Strangely, we have a mortgage payment that has to be paid by check, but that will go away. MVA documents but that will go away also.
Does anyone have experience or insight to documents that they only received hard copies of in the US mail? We're trying to avoid using a mail forwarding service and don't want to miss any important documents that we're not thinking of now. Any issue with tax documents?
Thanks in advance!
Portugal: Long term Portugal resident's comments to me:
Please only PM the answer. Don't want to turn that place toxic also :(
Portugal: Why I joined:
Thanks terrig123. Well put.
Portugal: Banking and PT Mortgage payments:
We are buying a home in portugal and will have a Portuguese bank loan. Eventually this will be our permanent residence, but for the next year we'll remain in the US, except for a few trips.
I'm curious if anyone have good advice/options for making the monthly payments without 1) Incurring large monthly transfer fees, or 2) Sending a large amount of cash over to PT bank account and have auto-pay set up.
I guess this goes for all payments - tax, electric, water, etc.
Once we are there it will be simple, but in the interim...?
Any tips would be appreciated.
Portugal: Initial scouting tour:
I'm on TMobile network and my phone worked very well everywhere I went. I called my provider and they said they have an agreement with the providers in Pt so I had no problems at all. I recommend just calling your service provider and asking.
