Uruguay: Dentistry in Montevideo:

Crazy - you are such an engaging writer !! i think you should write a book about your experiences here. so much fun to read.

Uruguay: Chip card problems:

Our ATM cards are still chip-free but our regular VISA has a new chip and several times i've been asked for a PIN number which, as a regular credit card, doesn't exist. Usually by the third or fourth pass it goes through. odd. But, hey! another thing to add to your "likes" list.

Uruguay: weird water in Punta del Este?:

We are in a "suburb" of P. del Este and our water is a weird color today. It smells normal, (I'm not wanting my family to taste it!) it is ?beige? Anyone else know of any water problems??

Uruguay: Tomorrow Sunday, hottest day of the summer so far!:

thanks for the heads up!

Uruguay: New to Uruguay:

Hi Rick, Interesting choices! i know basically nothing about Gregorio Aznarez, but we looked extremely closely at La Paloma / Rocha when we first came at the end of 2013. We really loved the small town atmosphere of La Paloma and all of the natural delight of the Lagoon - but eventually became concerned about the planned deep water port - scheduled (MAYBE) to be built a few km north of La Paloma. We thought if that port goes in - it will change the area dramatically, increase the traffic and destroy or at least adversely effect the bird and other wildlife. Who knows if it will ever be built - but we elected to go where we didn't have to worry about it. If you aren't wed to living near the water / ocean - there are many lovely, reasonably priced areas - and even on the coast there are charming less frenetic and expensive places than Punta del Este and Montevideo such as Colonia and Piriapolis. Good luck with your explorations! Hope you find what you are looking for. We certainly did. ciao

Uruguay: Discovery Visit:

just to be as confusing as possible (sorry) Rocha is a department, but there is ALSO a small town (i'd guess a population of 20,000??) called Rocha just inland (hwy 15) from LaPaloma - but it sounds like you already know that! Rocha (town) has little to offer (imho). i prefer a town, in Maldonado department of about the same size but much prettier is San Carlos. it is a classic Spanish town, single story homes on a grid around a lovely church, central square. It has a real community feel - lots of small comparsas made up of everyone - little kids to grandmas - for Carnaval, lots of folks hanging out with family in the square, nice architecture. And it is close enough to Punta del Este and Maldonado to be part of that expat community if you want to be.

Uruguay: Getting settled in Piriapolis:

you are not that far from Punta del Este now. There is a really nice expat group that meets once a month for brunch on 3rd Monday of the month. Next Monday (2 days from now) we will meet 11 am on. Here is the (cut &pasted) email from Silvia our fearless leader: Meeting next MONDAY the 18th. at 11:00 a.m. Inbox x Punta Expats Jan 13 (2 days ago) to Silvia, bcc: dianne Hello, EXPATS/English-speakers of Punta del Este! Hope you are enjoying the holiday season and the fine weather. Looking forward to seeing you again. It's time to meet , Third Monday of the month. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR for next week: MONDAY, JANUARY 18th. at 11:00 a.m. We will meet again across the street from the PUERTO/MARINA at PEPERONE Puerto. There's usually plenty of parking space on the Street (Rambla). Hopefully the weather will be nice and we will be able to sit outdoors on the huge terrace with the big white umbrellas. If it rains we can all sit inside. Address: Rambla Gral. Artigas, almost at the corner of 12th. Street (12th. Street is also called Virazon street), in PUNTA DEL ESTE. Phone Number: 42-44.39.15 In case you've never been there: There is a Freddo ice-cream parlor right beside Peperone, and an Art Gallery on the other side. And a huge parking lot across the street. There is no need to respond to this invitation. Just show up...and feel free to bring any English-speaking friends/guests! So let's meet on MONDAY the 18th. at 11:00 a.m. THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL DISCOUNT (10%) ON EVERY ITEM FOR OUR GROUP (Except on the Daily Special-Menu). Sharing is permitted. IF POSSIBLE, PLEASE REMEMBER TO ASK THE WAITER FOR YOUR BILL WHEN YOU FINISH ORDERING. OTHERWISE IT TAKES A LONG TIME IF EVERYONE ASKS FOR THE BILL AT THE SAME TIME, and the waiters tend to get confused! NOTE TO ALL NEWCOMERS: We are not being charged for using the facilities at the restaurant, but EVERYONE is required to order something; a late breakfast, lunch, a pizza, coffee, a soda, a beer, whatever you wish from the menu, but DO order something. PLEASE! BOOK EXCHANGE: We will have books in English for you to take home. If you have spare books, please bring them along. If you are new to the area and need directions, please let me know. Regards, Silvia Haas Hope to see you there!!!
