Costa Rica: Adoption in Costa Rica:
Does anyone have any knowledge of or experience with adoption in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica: moving to CR with child:
I'm also planning on moving to Costa Rica with my son who just turned 6. I won't get in to the birth discussion since, due to my fear of hospitals, I actually hired midwives to have my son at home in Italy :)!
However, I have spent a year trolling the internet for info on the best places for schooling etc. for kids in Costa Rica (sadly my last trip around Costa Rica was 20 years ago so a lot has changed, but we'll be back soon) and the place that I'm leaning toward right now is the Guanacaste region between Tamarindo and Playa del Coco. Probably right in the middle of those two. They have several good private schools (La Paz, Waldorf, a Country Day School, etc. all bilingual and with an emphasis on respecting local culture and language) I haven't looked at the public system but due to what seems to be a thriving community there I would think they would also be good. It seems a bit touristy but that comes with a nice place near the beach and generally means better internet connections. It's also within a short distance to Liberia airport, and driving distance to rain forests and mountians and volcanos. There are also a lot of things for kids to do like water sports, karat/judo, horse riding etc. It rains less there than other parts of Costa Rica so it's a tad on the dry side but that also means more sun and (just an irrational fear in my relative old age, less chance of crocodiels eating our dogs or cats :) ? Silly, I know, but such things do sometimes cross my mind...! ) We're also vegetarians and I think that Costa Rica is a wonderful place to be so, all of the fresh produce, rice and beans. Let us know what conclusions your research leads your family to.
Costa Rica: Bringing pets into Costa Rica:
Does anyone have any expierience bringin pets into Costa Rica that they can share? I've read that my 6 would be too much. Are there any special vaccinations or is it much like most countries, rabies shot and a good bill of health? And how realistic is it to find a rental with pets?
Costa Rica: Considering becoming an ExPat in/near the Guanacaste area:
I'm thinking of making the same research trip and then, hopefully, applying for residence with my 6 year old son. I haven't been to Costa Rica in years and have lived as an expat in Italy for the last 14 years so I've been doing a lot of resaearch on the net. The private schools in the area look quite good. I'm very interested in visiting the La Paz School and a few others. And there seem to be good rental options for a small family in the 600$ a month range. And the common response to an idea of an economic budget per month seems to be 1000 to 1500$ which seems reasonable if a residency asks for you to deposit 60,000 for 2 years and take out 2,500 a month. The area looks great for kids so I'm hopeful. However, getting residency looks costly so I'll probably hire help for that. And then I'm getting confusing aswers about working in CR. IT seems that aside from special circumstances a person has to wait 3 years and get permananent residency to work. Well, good luck with your trip and let me know if you find out any interesting information. I'll do the same!
