The most important thing is to choose a good zone to live. Then Rent a good house in a building which offers more security. I use to recommend a house, 5th floor furnished apart in the best place in SD called Piantini. You can take a look at it here http://santodomingo.craigslist.org/apa/5381820378.html . The place is very well located, near almost everything you need to carry your live. The place is for rent no for sale and it´s a family type of condominium.
