Dominican Republic: advice for where/$!:

I'm a 23 year old American girl wanting to live in DR for several weeks, possibly several months. I'm looking for an area with walking distance to the beach as well as a small walk to markets/restaurants. I also want to be close to hiking and other beautiful nature. I also would like an area that has English speaking people and a somewhat touristy vibe while still being filled with peace and beauty. I looked into Puerto plata but am still unsure what would suit me best. Any ideas??
