Malaysia: Moving from US:

I am from Texas and want to spend 6 months in Penang. I know I can go for 60 days, but how I can go for 6 months, travel one or two times to other near countries, and not paying extra for return flight changes to US. Does any one have this experience before? Further, I may decide to go another 6 months to Tayland without having to return to US. That is one year of vacation in Asia with flexibility to buy tickets locally from Penang, but do not want to pay for changes in return ticket to US. I need a Guru to help me on this!
