Hi. I sent you a PM

Portugal: Initial scouting tour:

Hello all. Sorry for butting in on this thread, but I’m grasping at straws at the moment. I’ve sold my house and I need to relocate no later than the beginning of February 2017. Portugal is still at the top of my list of candidates, although the “horror stories “ about the bureaucracy is slightly concerning. As I’m still some years away from retirement age, I need to invest in something that can generate a modest income. I have had discussions with several parties towards this end, i.e. helping each other out in the transition period, as well as possibly starting some kind of business together. Unfortunately, nothing has come of it. I have had one brief visit to Lisbon, earlier this year, but I would also need to go on one, or more, scouting trips to decide if Portugal is the right place for me. And if so, what region (I’m looking for a nicer climate, so I’ve been thinking Algarve, or more recently, the Azores). As I mentioned, I have had no luck with the people I have talked specifics with previously, so at the moment I’d be grateful for some kind of ”network” to talk to about challenges, etc. (I’m in Scandinavia, not the US, by the way.) Cheers, Tore

Portugal: Changing location of entry:

Hi Priscilla. I sent you a couple of Private Messages a while back. Can you check them out, please?

Portugal: Looking for a business partner:

Hello all. This is the follow up to a post i made in the Global Section, a while ago. At the time, I called out for others who were 1) looking to move to a better climate, and 2) thinking about setting up a business to generate an income. Since then, I have been contacted by another couple and we have debated both destination countries, as well as possible sources of income. We have landed on Portugal, specifically the Algarve region, as the most likely destination for us. As for business, we’re thinking of starting with a “safer bet” from the projects evaluated. So in the end, we’re researching, and budgeting for, purchasing a small hotel. Possibly not the most original idea, but we believe we have a number of “added value” ideas that will make it more interesting. Apart from the usual hurdles, our major challenge is the fact that our time frames are not 100% in alignment. Another, smaller, challenge it that decision making, when we disagree, can be more difficult with only 2 parties. We have decided to reach out to the expat forums, once more. We’re looking for one, or two, more partners to discuss opportunities with. If this sounds like you, please PM me: • You’re already living in Portugal, or have decided to move there in 2016 • You are honest and not afraid to work hard, when needed • You have a bit of capital to invest Preferably you will have skill / experience we can use, as well. We’ll be insisting that all participants be represented by a lawyer, before any agreements are signed, for everybody’s economic safety. Please note that although you can be careful about what information you divulge about yourself to begin with, we expect you to make a summary of your skills / experience, and your thoughts about entering into such a venture. We also understand that most people will be skeptical about this, but talking can’t possibly hurt. Cheers, Tore

Costa Rica: Import tax - Please confirm:

This has likely been discussed, but I’m asking again to confirm that my understanding is correct. If so, it makes CR drop a lot further down on my list of desirable destinations. This is my understanding: If I move to Costa Rica, with eventual residency in mind) and ship my remaining personal belongings, all used, from my country of origin, it’s likely I’ll end up paying up to 100% of the NEW value of said items in import taxes (based on C.I.F.). Additionally there’s the cost of shipping + insurance. Is this correct? Although I have gotten rid of most of the items I owned, I still have a “container’s worth” of books, movies, etc. 99,9% of these items have been in my possession for 1 – 30 years, and I don’t have receipts for anything over 3 years old. I understand the government of CR is eager to get some tax money, but budgeting for what amounts to purchasing all my stuff over again, seems harsh. (Again, keep in mind that this is stuff I’d *really* like to keep.) Cheers, Tore

Global Expat Forum: Starting over abroad - Joint venture?:

Hello all. I hope this is an appropriate place to post this sort of thing. Background: Finding myself alone for the first time in 30(-ish) years, I’m playing with the idea of starting life afresh, in a nicer climate. My preference will be to run my own business, and not seek employment with some ‘soulless major corporation’. I’m 50+, and have worked in oil, IT, and (of late) hotel related businesses, as well as making a living as a consultant. I have worked as project manager, IT manager, IT support management, and I have also some experience as an entrepreneur. My interests as diverse: Cooking, literature, travel, gaming, photography, technology, to name a few. I’m able to fill many roles, some better that others, but there is strength in numbers, so I’m seeking 1-3 others who have been thinking along the same lines. The idea is to create a team (for lack of a better term) that will help and support each member, as well as cooperate on the business end of things. Helping each other deal with ‘culture shock’ is also a great reason to not go solo. I have been mulling this over for a few months now but I’m keeping this post very general in nature, on purpose. Specifics such as location and business model will be worked out by the team, if this thing leaves the ground. Goals: • Move to a new country in 2016 • Set up a holding corporation, owned and managed by the team • Short term: Set up a business that is able to support the team members at some minimum standard we define • Mid term: Make the business profitable enough to expand into yet more businesses • Long term: Being able to enjoy our new life. For some this means staying active in the business, for others it might mean • Work hard – have fun – enjoy life – make friends PM me if: • You’re keen on this idea, and would like to form an informal (in the beginning) workshop • You’re strongly considering relocating to another country, preferably in the southern part of the EU (Italy, France, Malta, etc) • You have some funds to invest in this, as well as supporting yourself until a revenue stream is established • If you have a family: They are 100% on board with the idea and are prepared to deal with lean times in the beginning. • You would like to invest in one, or more, businesses managed jointly with others • Although renting seems the prudent thing in the short term, buying property is your long term goal • You are an absolutely honest person. Mistakes are ok, as long as we learn from them, but there can be no leniency where honesty is concerned. • You are the sort of person that is prepared to work hard for little or no salary in the short term. You enjoy this type of challenge, and are both mentally and economically prepared for it. Of course, there is no commitment at all at this stage, but I strongly encourage you to share your own thoughts on settling abroad and becoming self employed (in the context mentioned above). You should also say a few words about yourself and your current situation. Cheers, Tore
