Philippines: Food Ingredients You Miss Most:
"All the supermarkets here". That does not describe any supermarket in Tacloban, as none of the products mentioned of late are available here. I have looked for some of them when in Manila but to no success. Smile
Philippines: Held Hostage:
It maybe a scam. But - i was in hospital in Cebu in 2013 for 7 weeks and the bill had to be paid in part every 5 days and i was not permitted to checkout until the total bill was paid. I had run out of cash and could not get to a bank. Friends had to give/loan funds to pay the hospital. I mentioned it to my doctor that i was not allowed to checkout and he said - they cannot keep you in hospital legally, but they will not allow you to leave either without full payment - whatever that meant.. That possibly was because im a foreigner but Filipinos have said similar. Smile
Philippines: Medical Prescriptions?:
Regular private doctors can not usually prescribe Valium or similar as they do not have what is called a "Yellow License" for drugs. My doctor told me if i wanted such meds i should consult any type of Psych doctor as they have the correct license. Smile
Philippines: How much are you really living on?:
Well written Poochewer. Fully agree
Philippines: TIEZA travel tax:
Not just Philippine passport holders. You still pay TIEZA if you have a SRRV and have not been out of Philippines in more than a year. The airport departure tax is now included in your airline ticket, for over the past year. That inclusion in the ticket price only applies to flights departing from Manila and Cebu. Smaller airports will still collect at departure.
Philippines: SRRV:
Hi, When I applied for my SRRV, i gave them a bankers cheque drawn on Royal Bank of Canada. They refused and said they would only accept a direct funds transfer from another country - deposited directly to the Philippine bank [ approved banks only].
Philippines: Banking in PI:
No need for an ACR card. When i opened my first account in Philippines i just went to BDO and spoke to the manager. Said i was planning on moving to Philippines in a few months and needed an account to transfer my pension into. He said thats ok but only a peso saving account - show passport and 2 1 x 1 photos.
Philippines: Philippine culture/wife's family:
Good on you Floppie for your point of view about god parents. The parents just keep breeding and hoping someone else will take care of the kids. Just say NO and give the message. Smile
Philippines: Is it just me:
Well written Ace and CATeacher. Peace Corp is good for Americans to see some grass roots in many countries. I went on 4 different country placings with CUSO [Kind of Canada's equivalent to Peace Corp or the British VSO}. Well worth the efforts for people of any age to experience.
Philippines: Retiring In the Philippines: Pros & Cons:
Definitely not correct. Canada only taxes you on income received during the tax year. Nothing to do with a boat car etc.. I should know as i dont pay any Canadian tax but i still have Canadian incomes while living in Philippines.
