Dominican Republic: Business:

Hi I am based on the North Coast in Sosua where we have one of the largest North American communities who come out day and night. However, you will hardly find any tourists venturing out in Punta Cana as all the all inclusive hotels tell them not to leave the hotel unless on a guided tour. Its wrong because I was there three week ago for a long weekend and I walk everywhere but not necessarily at night. There are a couple of malls that the guides take them to but not at night. If you want me to give my opinion of your business idea I will be happy to do so. I am British and have lived here for 7 years working for a major realtor instead of writing film scripts and books which I came to do when I retired from City of London. I will never divulge any information you send me and we can talk on video/whats app if you wish first

Dominican Republic: wgat is the quality of healthcare in domi.ican republic:

Hi. I'm 68 but took out local insurance policy when I arrived here 7 years ago as I was warned that getting medical insurance over 65 was impossible. My last payment was 4,900 pesos for 3 months and my wifes was 9800 pesos but she has had many treatments in hospital. There is a large selection of doctors in the Sosua and Puerto Plata area. The Homs hospital in Santiago has a very good reputation. I am told that there is medical and dental tourism to this country because of the treatment and price. Where do you plan to stay?

Dominican Republic: will be visiting D. R. on the first February will need some help:

Will the person who suggested DRexcapes (spelt wrongly) please advise what service they are offering for free as there is some adverse comments on one of the sites. If correct I would like to know about it.

Dominican Republic: relocating:

Hi Yes, Sosua is definitely less sleepy in fact many tourists come here for the night life. There is a large International community which is why I moved here from England seven years ago, as I only speak English. With regards hairdressers. Dominican women do like visiting hairdressers which is why there are many Dominican hairdressers but only a few Expat hairdressers so you could be successful if you build up a reputation just like any business worldwide. We had a hairdressers for sale a few months ago cost around $15,000 but there are vacant premises that you could rent.

Dominican Republic: areas with calm water:

I live in Sosua that has a very calm main beach where you will find many children playing, especially at weekends. This is the latest video of Sosua and Cabarete. The latter is more windy which is why its tso popular with all forms of surfing. We don't have the silver sands of Punta Cana but we have golden sands which is great for building sand castles. Plus, we have the stunningly beautiful countryside that PC does not have. When I visited Samana Penninsula the waters were calm and in Las Galleras and Terresas the sands where silver but did not stretch the vast distance of Punta Cana but at least you can access them without going through an all inclusive. This is why its fun exploring Sosua/cabaret area because of the variety of beaches that are accessible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kehLyeUQg8&sns=fb

Dominican Republic: CLARO, ORANGE, VIVA or TRICOM ?:

I have Orange and Viva and thinking of changing one to Claro because reception in my villa is poor. My advice would be to ask the place where you are staying to see which gives the best reception. I would also have Skype and Whats app on my phone and get those I will regularly call back home to do the same.

Dominican Republic: Are the crimes in north coast increasing ?:

Hi There is crime and I sense it is increasing but it's not stopping me walking everywhere, except late at night. The Dominicans are still the friendliest people in the Caribbean and if you ever take a journey in a gua gua(public transport) you will hear the laughter and occasionally the singing as they a popular tune is played on the radio. I had a client who was also concerned about crime so I sent him some statistics downloaded from the internet and asked if he would move to this town. "No way" he replied. I then added the town which is where he was living. in the States. The problem over here is that we have a large community of ex pats who meet up each day over coffee and drinks and sadly we humans now have a habit of looking for and talking about negative things. Thus, if someone had something stolen it is know about within hours and discussed then everyone chips in about other criminal experiences. To the point where it feels as if crime is on every corner, which it isn't. I agree with the previous comment about living in a gated community as it gives you a sense of security,. I don't, nor do I have dogs, only 25+ cats that would lick any intruder. I've been here 7 years and have no plans to move away as there is far more to living here, including healthier lifestyle, fresh air, constant sun shine, and lots of international and Dominican friends. Its worth humming the song "Always look on the bright side of life" as the universe will present positive aspects of life.

Dominican Republic: Water and Electricity:

Hi The information from Raven is very helpful and accurate. Nearly everyone I know uses large bottles of water you find in offices to drink and maybe cook with. (cost under a dollar) I use tap water to clean my teeth and I have a well 200 meters down. There are filter systems out here you can buy so you can drink the water, If you head for Cabarete /Sosua area email me and I will pass on what I.ve learnt over the past seven years.
