France: Health status:

To retirees, most EU countries require proof of sufficient income, no criminal record, etc but also require proof of 'good health'. I understand not wanting retirees to strain the country's healthcare and requirements to have private health insurance, but it seems they are asking about the medical conditions of prospective retirees, though I can't tell if that's just to prevent contagious diseases or weed out people with health issues. . I'm disgustingly healthy but my wife has a number of medical problems. If we have insurance, is that sufficient? I've' seen quotes from Cigna and they seem quite high. Is other insurance available?
