Oman: Looking for a house in Oman this summer 2010:
Just wanted to make you all aware that the property market in June - August goes crazy here just before the new school starts!
Therefore if you want to be sure of viewings and you also want to find the right house at the right price BEFORE the rush, its adviseable to get sorted in June and come across even for a weekend to see what is around.
For all to rent or buy Gulf Property World are the best LOCAL agent who almost have a monopoly on The Wave in particular as they all know so much about it ( most of their staff live there!).
Their website www.gpw-oman.com will be up and running in 2 weeks time but you can contact them on info@gpw-oman.com .
Best of luck and when you get here, join the AWG and the Women's Guild as they offer all the activities and info for newcomes mums, singles or grannies !
Oman: Singles in Oman:
Hey there
Yes of course there are lots of people you are bound to meet when you come to live here. I arrived here 3 years ago in the same boat almost and have met some lovely people.
Let me know when you arrive and Id be happy to meet you for a coffee as i know just how it feels when you first arrive in a new country !
Bon Voyage.
Oman: Moving to Muscat:
Hi JoeGal
Muscat is an incredible place if youre the active type as you can get out at weekends and visit the surrounding mountains, wadis and desert.
In town, there are lots of activities like the AWG and the Womens Guild. Also worth doing is going to see Gulf Property World ( locally run real estate agent almost entirely run by devoted Brits) who can hook you up with a great place to rent or even to buy if you are here for long enough! Their website is currently down but will be back up and running in 3 weeks from today ( www.gpw-oman.com ).
Out of all the schools I hear that ABA is the best but then again if you wanted to live where the rest of the expat community live with the kids you need to look at living on The Wave which is a new development out here with villas, apartment and townhouses ( the first place where expats can actually BUY a home too). There are families that I know that have moved here solely so that their kids can all be nearer their friends in a safe, clean friendly environment!
For any other info, there are so many places to enquire. Best of luck with it all. Dont go looking for a house in August as there will be nothing great left by then..best to start early and come over for a weekend in late June before the rush!
Oman: thinking of moving to Muscat, Oman:
Hi MaeAbigail
Muscat is certainly NOT Dubai so we have a lot fewer clubs and bars however the activities you can do on the weekends and in the holidays MORE than make up for this...you can go to a bar anywhere in the world but you cant camp in the virgin desert or dive with dolphins or go to an idyllic desert island there!
There are loads of expats if you are in the right areas and certainly dont feel that you are in the middle of nowwhere so i wouldnt worry there. The difference I would sum up is that in the UAE you dont really see any Emiratis walking around whereas in Oman you DO see them..you are in their country after all but they are the friendliest people I have ever met so I wouldnt worry at all!
Your salary is heaps. You could easily rent a place for 1 person at about 400 rials and still have MORE than enough left over each month.
Contact www.gpw-oman.com ( website up and running in 3 weeks time) for more info.
Oman: Possibly moving to Oman:
Hi there. Im moving there this weekend to work and live in tourism.
Im 32 and UK female moving out to live with boyfriend who is Omani.
Oman is beautiful and so offers so much more than Dubai or Abu Dhabi. It has mountains, whale watching, real stunning scenery where beach meets desert for miles upon miles. You will not be disappointed.
There are loads of expats around your age or a bit older..im in touch with some of them already.
I have joined the Womens Institute to get to know more people. Also the Intercontinental Hotel is the best club for pool, gymn etc. You could join the PDO but you would have to know contacts working in that company. Otherwise the beach at Oman Dive Centre is lush and so quiet.again you would have to join there as a diver and then i guess could get the beach use for free.
Dont worry about it. Come and see for yourself. About housing, there is a real shortage but I work in a tourism company affiliated to property so we could help you find somewhere.
Mail me on lucy@gulfleisure.com for all your property or tourism needs in Oman.
Oman: Moving to Mucsat:
HI there is no problem with locals and expats. The Omanis are some of the friendliest people in the world in my experience and i have travelled a lot!
Housing is quite hard as there is a shortage but we can help you find somwhere to buy or rent..just email lucy@gulfleisure.com for more info.
We are also a tour company in Oman who will arrange weekends and holidays away for you in the stunning remote areas of this beautiful country.
Education is easy for expats and the cost of living is not dirt cheap but certainly not expensive.
I would recommend you buy the EXPLORER residents guide to Oman which will list everything you ever wanted to know about moving and living in Oman.
Mail me if you need more help about property or tours.
Oman: ReLocation to Muscat:
HI there. Im now living there as of a couple of months. A 32 yr old female, I work in tourism and also in property.
Housing is hard to find, if you want to buy, I may be able to help but if requiring renting, let me know also.
There is lots to do and see in Oman. I work at Gulf Leisure and we offer alsorts of tours and trips all over this beautiful country so mail me at lucy@gulfleisure.com for more info on that. Have a look at our website.
There are lots of expats out here so you will not be bored!
Oman: Move to Oman:
Am moving to Oman in April 2007 and want to know a few things:
- Can a European woman live with / or and marry an Omani man?
-Is it easy to get a local driving license?
- Are there any taxes to pay there if working for local company?
- What is cost of living if rent not included approx for single woman sharing in average flat with 2 others?
-Are there any European women out there living with or married to Omani men that could contact me for a chat?
-Any muslim girls out there that can get in touch with me for a chat about muslim men and daily life if NOT muslim woman?
- Any advice about mixed marriages and non muslim woman living in Oman?
-anyone know of any great beginner Arabic classes in Muscat that i could join in late April/early May and how much do they cost?
I have been to Oman and travelled around so know it and LOVE it but it will be very different living there of course. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated.
Oman: Advise on relocating to Oman:
Hi Rainbow and indeed by now Jo!
I am now the next statistic to relocate to Muscat..we are all at it following our men it seems..mine is Omani. I just wanted to know if either/both of you are out there now living as it would be great to meet some new friends when i come out at end of April?
I have a few questions for Muscat:
You said get an international health insurance in the UK..is this still necessary as i heard the health was good out there..is it not worth getting national health or does it not work out there?
There are no taxes right so are you saying that on your salary a month you pay ZERO out to the authorities apart from bills and rent? Seems incredible to me..hard to beleive?!!
What do ladies do in the evenings if they have no kids and want to go out with/without their other halves to socialise? I have ever only been to male dominated bars and i know this is the case in the MIddle East but you all must be going out drinking somewhere in one of the big hotels? Which are the best?
Are there are any areas to avoid living in Muscat and Greater Muscat..i think we were thinking about near Seeb? What is this like?
Re..driving licenses..do i have to get an international one or can i just drive on my UK one? Is this something i do before i come to Oman?
Do you have to register with anyone in Oman apart from your visa to say you are there? ie, british embassy, etc? ( in france i had to thats why i ask!!)
Do you know where i can get beginner Arabic classes that are excellent and can get me talking almost straight away.dont just want to do it for the sake of it but use it in everyday business? Around Muscat i mean of course?
What about clubs, dancing, pilates, etc..any of thoses anywhere? Are there any clubs for expat women etc to meet and catch up on stuff?
Sorry about the millions of questions..this is not just directed at rainbow and Jo so if anyone else is reading this and can answer of my questions, i woud be most grateful!!
