United States: Westchester teens, no dramas!:
Hi,
My family and myself will be spending this summer (as a minimum) in New York as my husband will be working in Manhattan. I have four children aged 14, 12, 10 and 7 and we are trying to decide where to stay to make the most of the experience.
I have been looking at Westchester, particularly Rye and the surrounding towns, but, I have read in a few places that the teens in Rye can be rather over privileged and I had concerns about my 14 year old daughter struggling to find people to hang out with as she is quite a laid back, cheerful sort of person and she wouldn't fit in to any groups where her peers would be overly materialistic.
I am hoping that anyone living in that area might know of any towns where there is a strong community spirit and there is plenty of things to do and a degree of freedom to be had for kids of varying ages.
We will be renting a house where we would like a garden and easy train links for my husband into Manhattan. We live in a small town in Gloucestershire at the moment where we can walk to most places and the two older children can go out and about with their friends, we would love to find something similar.
I would just like to say that I'm certainly not pre-judging the teens of Rye, I don't believe everything I read on the Internet and would be happy to hear that the information that I've read is totally wrong. I am also not from the camp of people that have a bad opinion of teens in general, I have worked in education myself and have met some amazing young people (I'm also quite fond of my own teenager!)
Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated as, if we have a great summer, this will probably lead to a more permanent move.
Thanks in advance
