United States: Moving to NY with small family:

Hi, Please can anyone help us with experience of living in NY. We will be moving to NY in a few months but we don't have experience on living. We have 1 child (7yrs) and our first priority is school for her. Where to live to place her in the best school....in the city or out? We also prefer to have a bit more space and my husband will commute to the airport most days. Can you recommend a rental property website or contact and AREAS as the area is huge and would like someones first hand experience. What are some of the best Elementary schools to have an idea when we visit to check a few of them out. Thank you!
