Portugal: Technology:
Hello Midmo,
One thing to be aware of; keyboards in Portugal don't use the Querty layout, the differences are minimal, but it can be annoying. Our solution was to buy a screen and bring a keyboard from home. We have no problems using our own laptops or tablets. We are use a vodaphone dongle (unlimited wifi) which is adequate for us both to work online at the same time, or to watch movies. There are other providers though and it might be worth checking them out.
Best of luck,
Michefra
Portugal: Potential places to live:
Hello Auburngrad82,
Whilst not one of the towns you mentioned, you might consider Ericeira as being worth a thought. It is approximately 30 mins by car from the airport, has good bus links to other towns and cities, it has a health centre with the nearest hospital being in Mafra. It does not suffer from fog as affects towns further to the north, occasionally it is windy but nearly always sunny. It is well served by larger shops (continente, aldi, lidi, mini preco) but has retained its village charm with lots of interesting restaurants, ice cream shops, little boutiques etc. Best of all are the beaches! Water sports are very popular here, but there is ample opportunity to just sit, relax and enjoy the views. You can get a tosta and coffee for 2.2o in some of the cafes, so living here does not break the bank!
Good luck in your search,
Michele
Portugal: Vacation:
Jim,
Hard to find places that are not hilly in Portugal! but Cascais is a nice vibrant town, on the coast, with plenty of cafes and not very hilly. Inland there is Torres Vedras, a big town with good transport links, where the old and new cultures exist side by side.
Good luck,
Michele
Portugal: Mosquitos:
Have been in Ericeira on and off since January and have not noticed this as a problem, including in the lovely very warm weather of the recent weeks. The rest of the summer remains to be seen! Friends tell me it is not so much of a problem though. Good luck with your decision making.
Portugal: Safety, social atmosphere for retired American single woman?:
Hello,
In the process of moving to a lovely small village (Ericeira) on the coast around half an hour from the airport. Two things that I had not been aware of when making plans.: (1) it is very expensive if not impossible to purchase health insurance in Portugal if over the age of 70, (2)the motor ways are wonderful, but tolls can add up quickly, especially if hopping from one motorway to another. The toll from Lisbon airport to Ericeira for a regular car is app €2.90, which is quite reasonable. Aside from the easy commuting we chose Ericeira because ; it is beautiful!, lovely costal walks, plenty of sea activities, great variety of restaurants, a library (used to be a casino!) , a beautiful town square and an adequate smattering of shops. It is within easy reach of bigger towns, Sintra, Mafra, Cascais and around an easy hour from Lisbon city. Pricewise, there seems to be a good variety to suit different pockets. the North side of the village appears to be more touristy. Thus far we have met few expats but those we have met have been nice and helpful, but there has been no problem getting understood when speaking English or trying out our pitiful Porteguese. Above all, we feel very safe here. So good luck- but be sure to check out the health insurance!
Portugal: Ericeira:
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has settled in Ericeira and had some tips about life there?
Portugal: Artists?:
I have seen an art supply shop in Ericeira. It also does framing. not sure as to the level of expertise it can accommodate.
Portugal: where on the Silver Coast?:
Craigandmicki,
you seem to be well travelled and knowledgable about the Silver Coast! Do you know anything about Ericeira? It seems to be a lovely village regardless of tourist seasons, but I have not met many non Porteguese residents. Is it not a popular place for ex pats to settle or have I just not looked around enough????
Portugal: Ericeira:
Hi Graham,
I was wondering whether you settled in Ericeria? My husband and I were looking around the area last year and recently found a home there.

Portugal: Retire in Lisbon or Cascais?:
Consider Ericeira, a village not far from both Lisbon and Cascais!
Broad range of accommodation, lovely village centre, bars, restaurants, many amenities.
PM if you would like more info or to meet up.
