Colombia: Villages near Armenia for retirement:

As CCCMedia indicated, Circasia is so close to Armenia that you are not fully committed to the pueblo, especially if you live just outside and have a car. (Not to say a car is essential, it's a personal choice). I was a little lukewarm on Circasia when I decided to move into a conjunto on the outskirts, but I'm beginning to appreciate it a little more as I get to know it. I still make as many trips to Armenia as I do to Circasia.

Colombia: Swim, bike, run and rent a durnished room or live with a family.:

If you want to run, bike, swim and workout in Armenia it's doable if you are brave enough to bike on the highways and have a membership for Bolo Club (unless you don't mind swimming in a small pool in some complex). There's not much problem with the running part but gym memberships are one of the things that are more expensive in Colombia.

Colombia: Can you drink the water in Colombia:

I've never taken special precautions in Armenia. However, a few months ago in the local paper (La Cronica Del Quindio) it was revealed that there were "bugs" (I don't remember the specific scientific name) found in the treated water. For adults there is no grave danger but for children under four years possible serious medical problems could result. Sounds scary but people here don't seem too concerned, although most I know filter their tap water.

Colombia: Expats who returned to US or Canada:

I've barely lived in Colombia long enough for the new to wear off, but on a recent short trip to the USA I couldn't stop thinking about the cost of meals in restaurants.

Colombia: Fiador in Pereira/Armenia?:

If you go through a rental agency in Armenia they will want one or even two fiadores. At least that was the case when we rented from Alianza. But if you rent from an individual he or she can waive that requirement.

Colombia: Buying a house in Armenia:

Testolas, it depends on what you are looking for. The climate is warmer south of Armenia, a little cooler if you get something just north of town. I've been looking at houses for several months and finally pulled the trigger on one near Circasia. There are also house available right in town. A lot depends on your price range. There are some very nice conjuntos cerrados. Some were in my budget, others a little pricey. .

Colombia: Medellin vs. Cali: Internet, Food Items, Transportation:

Visitando, maybe it's because I live in Quindio, but for me Colombia is a fruit lover's paradise. It's true that great watermelons and cantaloupes may be hard to find, but where in the USA can you get quality zapotes, mangosteenos (or mangosteens), cherimoyas, etc. I do find it disconcerting that some supermarkets refrigerate their tomatoes, but some places in the USA you have to search to find quality tomatoes.

Colombia: Fear of Flying (Metaphor?):

Steve, interesting dream, but despite my psychology major (or maybe because of it) I firmly believe that Freud wasting a lot of time attempting to interpret dreams. Interesting story: Freud let Carl Jung interpret his dreams for a few days and decided that was enough. It's much more comfortable being the master.

Colombia: Run in with Taxi Driver:

I'm still getting used to cab drivers in Armenia, who will occasionally round down a fare to make it even, and if you try to round up the money you give them they will almost chase you down and give you money back if it's more than 500 pesos.

Colombia: Colombian wife:

FYI, if a Colombian girlfriend comes to the USA on a tourist visa planning to marry, the Feds can say that is a violation of the visa terms. If she comes to the US on a tourist visa and on the spur of the moment decides to marry, it can be argued that it is not a violation. This is what our immigration attorney told us 13 years ago when my wife and I were in a similar situation.
