Philippines: Friend scammed out of money:
Thought I would share this story.
I friend of mine in the states was recently scammed out of $1,800 USD. How did this happen you wonder (even if you don't I'll press on).
My friend is recently divorced so he was looking for a bit of companionship so he joined Fling.com which is a hook up site. A lot of the women on the site are really just wanting to hook up with a guy and from what he has told me they usually only use the site to converse with each other.
The 'other' women on the site are drop dead gorgeous. These women when he contacted them all wanted to chat via text, which I thought was a bit odd. Most people on the site from what he said all want to keep their numbers private until the do decide to hook up. Anyway, he contacted a girl who was going to stay with him for a month. The catch was he had to get a security number which costed him $100, then he was asked to pay anther fee for something (I forgot what), but this was $300. To have the girl actually be able to stay with him for a month he was then told it was another $1,300.
All of the money was sent via Western Union to the Philippines. He didn't tell me where he was sending the cash until the $1,300. I did tell him not to send it and just right off the initial $400, but he really wanted this "girl" to stay at his house for a month.
Needless to say, he did send the money, sent the person a text that the cash was sent and never heard another word from them.
These scams happen a lot and I think he learned his lesson, I hope, but we shall see. Sending cash via Western Union to an unknown person promising anything after the money is sent is probably a scam - IMO.
Just thought I would share my friend's misfortune, he's bummed, but a little bit wiser.

Mexico: Cabo San Lucas - retiring:
My wife and I have been looking at many different places to retire and Cabo is one of them. Would anyone have any insight as to costs, areas to get a place.
-We found out about working (don't plan on it)
-We do plan on driving down from the USA boarder
-Looked into what it takes to get a pet down to MX, not to crazy.
I guess it's just monthly costs (very general). Places differ a lot so the amount will vary.
Thanks in advance on any help.
Philippines: El Nido-Place to stay while visiting:
I’m looking for a decent place to stay while visiting El Nido. I would like to have at least air con & WiFi and I would also like to find something at a good price.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks
Philippines: Atrocious behaviour of some expats:
I have been reading many topics on this board and I have seen an overwhelming group of responses to be full of contempt, anger, spite, and a slew of other things.
IMO people who are looking at this board, if they are new, and start reading posts would run.
There are some that truly want to help, but those are overshadowed by the people that post comments just to be spiteful and mean.
I would hope anyone going to the Philippines never runs into those expats because they would defiantly get the wrong impression of how an expat should act.
I have seen the (gronk, hammer head, snide, twonk) comments from almost every country posting on this board so everyone (ones who are making comments) gives it a go.
I'm not sure why the offending expats do this, maybe it makes them feel better about the situation they are in or they just truly want to be mean and it makes themselves feel better.
I do think that the really bad offenders should be banned from this board so that it's intended use of helping people doesn't get lost in all the slander.
I would hope this board cleans up it's act. (I'm only referring to the offending people, NOT everyone)
Thank you,
Good day
Philippines: How much are you really living on?:
I hear a lot about how people are living off of only $500 or for around $1000-$1500 a month.
What I'm wondering is how much are you actually making it on.
What would be a nice comfortable amount to retire on 2 - 3 - 4 or 5K a month? I'll be retiring in 3 or 4 years so I'm just starting to look into the Philippines. I really like the idea of being in a place that is a lot mellower than the U.S.
We have watched many (a whole lot) of videos on the Philippines on cost of living, but I would rather hear it from someone who isn't trying to make a vlog and have it generate income to make up for lack of funds.
My wife's parents are living on Luzon on around $4,000 a month and they say they don't have to worry about anything at all.
Thanks much
Philippines: Shipping household goods:
Has anyone shipped a container of household goods from Seattle, WA recently (2015 or 2016)? I want recent info since anything older would probably be outdated.
We are going to be retiring and will be moving to the Philippines. We don't have one place locked down yet as we are considering a few different locations.
I'm sure prices can vary a lot, but I am just trying to get a feel for what it might cost to ship household goods and maybe even a car.
Thanks in advance
Spain: Retirement in Spain/in our 60's/from US:
My wife and I are also looking into retiring in 3 years so we have time to look around for a place to settle down.
I will be 55 and my wife 53. We willl have between 5-6.5K USD a month to live on which in most places should be enough.
I heard that Barcelona is a a very nice place and aside from tourists, it's a great place to live. When I mentioned tourists I only meant that there be a lot of tourists going to Barcelona.
We are open to other countries & cities so we don't have any one place locked down yet.
Suggestionshelp are welcome. Post or PM are fine.
Thanks
