Hey thanks for the heads up Morell. I don't have enough stuff to worry about but I can always depend on you to add even more. I give you credit though, you are consistent with your spreading of doom and gloom. I can always count on you to find and share the most depressing topics you can find pulled straight from El Pais to brighten my day. Why you feel the need to do this kind of baffles me since the last thing people need these days is to be reminded of MORE bad news. Might have something to do with that misery loves company thing. Anyway, keep up the good work Mr. Sunshine!

Uruguay: 220 Volt tankless water heater:

Thanks Morell. Do you know specifically what the size of the service means? Does it have anything to do with a tiered rate system or is it directly related to the characteristics or the incoming voltage/amperage? This is a new one on me that of course does not exist where I live. Thank you Pete

Uruguay: Starting New life in Uruguay:

Greetings to you too my middle eastern friend. What I would recommend you do is go through the past posts of this website and you will find all of the suggestions and recommendations that have have posted to help people just like yourself who have been curious about relocating to Uruguay. I am in the process of doing that right now myself for my own knowledge and also for a little project of mine that I will post about here soon. I have learned so much from the nice people that hang out here and I am sure you will too. bit-tawf?q ????????

Uruguay: Fraudulent pics of rental units:

I see a lot of hate coming from you Mr. Proger. Who made you the official ambassador on deciding who can do what in Uruguay? You should learn how to exercise some patience, tolerance, and understanding just like all the good people here have done towards you when you complained about every little thing for all the time you've been posting here. People here have been more than kind to you by offering you so much help and this is how you act? I hope everyone remembers your little tirade the next time you need your hand held because you could not figure something out on your own. Oh, and if I were you, I would not be making comments about someone learning a language as your English grammar needs a LOT of work my friend.

Uruguay: Searching a genuine and "honest" real estate agency:

Proger makes some good points about real estate agents. My experience with real estate agents here in the states has taught me that many, not all, really are mostly interested in their making their commission money. They usually have a network of players that they refer you to like home inspectors and mortgage brokers and they all work together to make it happen. Rarely will they do anything to cause the sale to fall through and they are not above lying or cheating to get what they want. A home inspector can overlook defects that you will only find out about after the sale and mortgage people can put you in a high rate mortgage all the while telling you you are getting a great deal. And sadly it can all be legal due to all the disclaimers in their contracts. They all have cute little slogans with "head shot" type pictures on their slick websites to give you the impression they are trustworthy but many times its all a big farce. Its a very cut throat business and they will do almost anything to make the sale. Is it any different in Uruguay? I can see from what I have read how it can be like that there but even worse as there does not seem to be much oversight or transparency. Heck there is no MLS system so I can only imagine what it would be like trying to navigate a system that is totally foreign to outsiders. Proger your advice about finding real friends is solid and a real good idea so let me know when you find some cause I am looking for some too :) It sounds like you have that end of things pretty much figured out. Maxbjork your advice sounds very helpful too. do you knnow if there is way to go online to check out if agents are legit at that Ministerio de Turismo and Deporte that you speak of? That would be the first place I would want to check if I had someone in mind that I was considering to use as my agent. Pete

Uruguay: Thyroid medicine availability:

I am on thyroid hormone replacement medicine aka levothyroxin or synthroid and was wondering if that is available at the pharmacy without a prescription? Does anyone on this group take that medicine and know if I need to see a doctor to get it? I have read that certain medicines that you need prescription for here in the states are available over the counter so I am wondering if maybe this is one of them. Thanks Pete

Uruguay: New vehicle payment options:

A big thank you to everyone that responded to my question about small pick-up trucks. Now after reading threads about banking and transferring money issues I'm wondering how one goes about actually paying for a vehicle if you buy one new at the dealer? I am an american citizen so has anyone from the states purchased a new vehicle and if you did how did you work out the payment? Thanks Pete

Uruguay: Small pick up truck suggestions:

I could use some advice on buying a small pick up truck. I know there are models for sale that they do not have in the states and prices are higher. I am looking for the best bang for my buck or peso and a reliable model is a priority. Good on gas is up there too. Here they stopped selling the small pick ups that Toyota and Datsun used to make but do they sell small ones there? I have an old small Datsun that still runs great but I know I can not bring it. I saw a post about low cost Chery trucks but some people said not that good. Is there any websites that have prices for new? Thanks Pete

Uruguay: limit with pullin cash from the atm problem:

Can you just deposit checks from american bank or maybe cashier check. and wait for it to clear

Uruguay: Warning to new arrivals to Uruguay:

This thread has me concerned in more ways than one and to me it sounds like the original poster had a bad experience with someone on this site but does not say who it is. The advice they gave is good advice and like someone said applies to anywhere but I do not think its just a general warning but specific to Uruguay. I would like to know who that person or persons are they are talking about because I am planning a trip there and if there are people that are out to screw me I would like to know who they are ahead of time. Someone said the laws there about calling people out are strict and maybe that is why no names were mentioned. So I am going to ask for some help and if anyone reading this has been taking advantage of financially by any business or person can you please contact me with a private message to tell your story. I do not have a lot of money and need to be careful and not get screwed by some con artist or shady business. One thing I read that made me think was the angry response by focus where he called the posters mother a whore in spanish. To me that sounded liek the post hit close to home for him to attack with that much anger. So again if anyone can hlep me out I would appreciate it and promise to keep your story confidential. Thanks Pete
