Jamaica: Thinking about moving to Jamaica:

Good morning, I tell you. I have never seen people who watch threads so closely JUST to provide people with disrespectful responses (aside from when I had an open FB page and took time to read through some of the foolishness on that site). Smh. If it truly is that annoying that people come to a website SPECIFICALLY ABOUT Jamaica to ask questions SPECIFICALLY ABOUT JAMAICA, then why not unsubscribe. I felt attacked the same way. You shouldn't assume that every person who plans to move to JA has the same perception or expectations of JA, or that we're all dreamers (dreamers are the people crazy enough to THINK we can make changes or do the unthinkable, which we end up doing, paving the way for othera), or that being a dreamer is a bad thing. I have been in JA for a little over a month now and because I know how to network well I have already been offered jobs (and I'm not even looking) and other options that could help me stay longer. Coming out of your expat bubble (of course you need to learn how Jamaicans move and be very careful of your surroundings, like many US cities, neighborhoods I know) is the beat way to get things done. And if u're an attractive female, things get done a lot quicker too (????), without having to jeopardize your integrity. Nonetheless, JA has a different culture, yes. They are "behind" (which I prefer to call grounded, because Americans are just spoiled and lazy, in general and yes I am American) in certain things, but they truly are developing. I'd rather them make certain things a bit more efficient while maintaining their culture and stop allowing the "modern world" to influence some of their poor decisions (Chinese involvement, American corporations interjecting with their poor habits, etc). That's another story though. Lol. Regardless, the RHYTHM of Jamaica is what grasps ppl's spirits. If you wanna move to Jamaica, do so. Don't let cyber-bullies get in your head. My suggestion though, if you will need work, is to find an American company that is looking to send workers here, or come here for shorter stays and network until you have met ppl who can help you. Lastly, I don't know much about Mobay and Ochi area, as I'm a city girl who love living in Kingston. My apologies for the rant, but I'm so annoyed with the same ppl bullying people who come on this forum. All they had to say was something like "welcome to the thread. If I were you, I would take a look throygh some of the previous threads to see if I could find the answers I'm looking for. On previous hreads, several people have discussed this very thing. I'd be glad to answer more specific questions." Or repeat ish they've said before or just hush and let things be. GEEEEEESH! #OKBYE Signed with love and feistiness, Ni

Jamaica: New Websites:

Thanks for sharing RickBlaine. I will check them out. .Ni.

Jamaica: american friends:

Hi, I'm not sure if it's appropriate to share here, but try the internations.org website. I'm not sure of your preferences, but I've been able to network with a couple of really cool people already. I am not leaving until the beginning of Dec. Best, .Ni.

Jamaica: 6 week stay in Jamaica ??:

Hi!! Where in JA do you plan to stay? .Ni.

Jamaica: Background check us:

Hi Adkins, Are you in Norfolk, VA!?! I live in Portsmouth, that's why I asked. Usually when you ask for a background check they do a statewide check. Did you take it back to the clerk and ask?

Jamaica: Expat's Spouse:

I TOTALLY agree Janni. I can't wait to reach Jamaica and collaborate. I will be in the Kingston area spending most of my time writing, so I know I will need this to help keep me sane. Lol. Although I won't be there until later this year, I would love to be included in this. Best

Jamaica: Jamaica... From a different set of eyes.:

Although I haven't made the move yet, we share the same sentiments. As Chronixx said "if you don't know hard life then you don't know life yet." It's beyond the "luxuries" many Americans are accustomed to. I know what I feel when I'm in Jamaica. I'm a personal stylist to people who want to feel more confident yet I feel the most confident and free when I am in Jamaica with my thrifted or way off brand clothing chilling on the veranda taking in nature or simply holding a meds. Jamaicans are full of vibes. For those who want to leave, I understand, but I remind my friends there that they live in paradise. Don't be fooled by the hype of Americans and their distorted views. Stay closer to nature and you stay closer to The Most High. Thanks for posting this. Blessed

WOW! My post has approximately 50 comments! Thank you all for the warm welcome. :-) .Ni.

Jamaica: Renting:

Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum, but I have had the opportunity to read some of the previous posts. Thanks for sharing such valuable information, as it prompted me to dig deeper in my research as I plan to move to Jamaica. Also thanks to you guys for making this process much more stressful than it was 2 days ago. HA! Truly, thank you for that. While I knew it would be A TRANSITION for sure, I was so excited that I did not really think about all of the technical stuff. Nonetheless, my move target date is in September. I will be moving to the Kingston area and am searching for a house with at least 2 bedrooms. I actually would prefer to live in Portmore, but open to living in Kingston. My absolute max is US$600/month, but really am looking for something lower than that. I already reached out to a few agents, but they haven't shown me any properties other than the ones listed on their websites (BLAH). If anyone has additional insight/suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Best, .Ni.

Jamaica: Mosquitos:

Oh wow! I've only experience tons of bites in Portmore & learned that they only come out during a certain time of night, for a certain period. Lol. It's so weird. My friends made some "repellent" with lemongrass oil. It calmed them down while sitting on the veranda, as well has having a fan blow on us. Although I'm not Jamaican, they didn't bother me as much as they did my friend (who is also American). I'd love to know what "cure" you find. Will you please let us know what ends up working for you? Thanks in advance.
