Realize, that publishing these warning, the keep American spending theirs $$$$$ in the USA.
Unless you want to play with their lucrative powder stuff market, everywhere in Mexico is safe.

Reading your experience of San Pancho ( San Francisco, Nayarit )
I would say Mexico is definitely not for you, because this is Mexico.
This small village has it's own hospital, and there is much more than one good restaurant, and a beautiful surf beach, maybe not recommend for family swimming, but to the north and south of San Pancho they're beautiful beaches Playa Chacala,, Sayulita just to name a few
Maybe you'll fit better back somewhere in the USA,
