Jamaica: Moving family to Jamaica:

Hello MrsMaxi, Welcome to the Forum, first and foremost this site will bring you information on personal experiences and also lot of hear-say. My word of advise to you is "follow your heart". Your family relationship is obviously very important to you. You already have one of the most important aspects of this change in your favor "job". Jamaica like all the other countries I have resided in have it's fair share of issues, never, let anyone tell you otherwise, all is not wine and roses, so be smart and be prepared to make adjustment which can sometimes be literally maddening. Choose wisely in everything you do, expect to slooooow down to almost a crawl with everything you do, especially in the business field. Jamaican people just do not like to rush or be rushed. Seek information wisely, you may get several answers for the same questions, Chose to reside in safe communities, keep in touch with your neighbors when it comes to simple matters such as hiring help, places that are considered safe for your family and such matters they are the best sources. All in all most people are helpful and mean well. I wish you all the best with whatever you decide.

Jamaica: Cleaning Woman:

RickBlaine I suggest you ask others in your community, you will get the best results that way. Lots of people have part-time helpers who are looking for additional work. Good luck.

Jamaica: Jobs:

I would love to move back to Jamaica as soon as possible, the only issue is that I am unable to find a job, I have a Bachelor Criminal Justice, a Masters in Education and working on my PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology (ABD). I am not keen on living in the city, I love the country parts. I have been working in the Educational Recruitment field for the past 12 years, however i am willing to work in other fields especially where children are concerned. If anyone have an offer or know of anything please contact me at. veronicamckay@bellsouth.net. Thanks

Sounds like a very good idea. Need and organizer.

Jamaica: Renting:

Hello stylistni, I am happy for you with your effort to move to Jamaica, you did not state if you have spent time on the island before, if you have not then you must make that trip before you make the final plans for September. As with every country, living in the city is always more expensive than living elsewhere. I tend to see things in a different light as I am originally form Jamaica. The hardest thing for me when I return home is the conversion of the currency, however you will get use to it. I find that being practical and think realistically will save you a lot of worry. Many of the homes in the Portmore area are well equipped, but be aware that they do not come with electrical appliances so you will have to provide your own. Grocery is relatively cheap, except for personal items. As I said as long as you do your research you'll be fine. Good Luck

Jamaica: Volunteer in your Organization:

Hi Roselyn07, if at all possible I would love to find any NGO that may be looking for paid volunteer. I am looking to return to Jamaica but I have not been able to find a job. Thanks

Jamaica: Moving from Florida to Jamaica:

RickBlaine, thanks for your true description of the lifestyle on the island in general. I spent some time on the island 3 weeks ago and found things just about the way you described them. My only issue is that I was not able to locate any information pertaining to jobs. Are you familiar with private education. This is the area of work I have been in for the past 12 years. (None teaching).

Jamaica: Mosquitos:

So sorry that everyone seems to be having a hard time with the mosquitoes. I invest in a few bottle of "Avon Skin so Soft " There is always some in my luggage, it never fails. Just rub it on the areas of your body that is exposed. You will thank me. ,

Jamaica: Move to Jamaica:

It is true that some of the locals in Jamaica work for less than foreigners, however the benefits can be very satisfying. Many professionals receive housing and transportation assistance which compensate for the lower wages. Yes it can be rough at first, but once you get accustomed to the culture, it all worth it.

Global Expat Forum: Are there any jobs available:

Are there any suggestions on how I can locate internationally. I have been looking for work for the past 2 years and to date have not found anything. I am a citizen of the United States originally from Jamaica, a PhD candidate (ABD) in I/O Psychology, I willing to work in most any field and relocating is not an issue. I have a very strong interest in NGOs especially where disadvantage children are concerned. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
