Uruguay: Best way to meet others on an exploratory trip:

My parnter and I are traveling to Uruguay in November or December to explore it as a possible winter retirement haven. What is the best way to network with others? We will only be there for a week or two initially--just to get an initial feel. What is important for me about considering a new country to retire in part time is to discover community. My partner and I are gay but that is not are primary identity. Our relationships are built upon people we love and relate to--whether gay or straight. However, I must admit part of our attraction to Uruguay is not only the European like lifestyle but the embracing of diversity and tolerance--or so I hear.
