Mexico: Crime in Mexico?:
"It would be nice if there was a way to vette some of the people that put out opinions and answers to people that really need help. Not to stop opinions but to know if some of these people have a clue what they are talking about or just trolls full of hot air (or maybe somewhere in between)."__________________________________________________________
I can say that I am not of those that are full of hot air. I do live here in Baja north. I got in trouble for a post a few weeks ago that was simply too candid and true. I will use more discretion in the future as people, especially many expats do not like blatent honesty. They come to Mexico for that dream life that is so much better than the life they lived elsewhere. Well, I'm one of those. I came to Mexico to live the dream and for the most I am doing that. The problem is, I'm a realist too. I am also very detail oriented. I see what's going on around me and in a small measure I can calculate the risk to me and my family. Because we are not into anything shady or questionable, we are basically safe, but not entirely. I won't go into details, I did that before and got into trouble. But I will say that this part of Mexico, is incredibly high risk for me and my family 'compared' to almost every other place we have lived in our life. But, we are still here and have not had any seriously dangerous encounters. We intend to stay in Mexico, just not Baja north. Maybe we'll return to BCS. It's nice and warm there.
Mexico: Merida Rentals - Fee for legal contract???:
I hear that a legal contract prepared by a lawyer is required when you are renting in Merida. It's cost is equivalent to one months rent and the tenant is burdened with paying that fee. Is this simply a new cash grab scam? Or is it truly required by law? I see some property managers in Merida are not charging this fee but others are, mainly those that cater to gringos.
Mexico: Cat food high quality in SMDA?:
We get our clumping cat litter from Costco. Not sure if SM has a Costco. I put no stock whatsoever in any cat foot in Mexico. Whether it's called premium or not, I consider it low quality. We've had to switch to soft canned cat food as our large male was not getting enough nutrition. We have made cat food for him and he likes it a lot. It looks like we'll keep making him home made cat food.
Mexico: Trouble settling in Mexico:
Isaac, have you considered teaching English online for one of the Asian companies in that business? I know of one that pays about $600-$700 usd a month for not many hours per week and you work from home. Hours aren't great, very early morning, but after a few classes per morning the day is yours. Try to keep a good mindset when thinking about work in Mexico. For comparison, I know of a young man offered a job with a local Pepsi plant at 150 pesos per 12 hour shift, so about 3600 pesos a month which is insane. Maybe 12,000 pesos per month isn't so bad until you have some experience?
Mexico: Temp Res Visa and car permit for Yucatan:
Does anyone have current information on bringing in a foreign plated car while on a Temporary Residence Visa? I would like to know the current rules/laws. Does the current law allow for this? Can I renew the permit yearly without going to the border? Any other info on this subject would likely be helpful. Thanks
Mexico: Road trip north to south:
Does anyone know of any blogs of those that have traveled via automobile from the north border to Mexico city or further?
Mexico: Gas stations closed:
This "bringing prices down because of new competition" requires typical business sense. My experience with "1/2" the Pemex's I've dealt with suggests the owners of the franchise don't possess good business sense. Some fix their pumps to cheat you, others allow or commit credit card fraud. From a North American standpoint, competition brings prices down, but not the case in Mexico.
Mexico: Merida Medical facilities:
So, in coming to terms with wanting to stay in Mexico, but not happy with the northern Baja I am looking at options. Merida, Yucaton is an option. Just wondering if anyone can comment on the quality of medical care there.
Mexico: Sentry Lane Violation:

Street vendors extort motorists in San Ysidro
Pretending they are security authorities, informal vendors trick people who by mistake end up in the Sentri Lane to cross the border. Every day, about 30 drivers who do not have the Sentri pass are victims.
Such is the case of Ricardo Saucedo, a resident of Baja California Sur, who on Sunday, December 3, while using his GPS system on his cell phone, ended up in the Sentri Lane, in spite of not having a Sentri pass.
At that moment, some illegal merchants, pretending they were border security guards, who even "had a badge," and wearing burgundy and with a badge, told him to continue ahead in the same lane to help him exit it. Ricardo ended up a few meters from the access module, and in US territory.
The man and his wife were closed in between retaining walls and cones to identify the lanes that the illegal merchants had placed.
He had no way out. The fake guards then offered to move the cones so he could change lanes to the Ready Lane, in return for 8,500 pesos (US$425), and that way he could avoid paying a fine of up to $5,000 to the US government.
The extortioners told him that the security cameras at the border crossing would detect he had no Sentri card and he would have to face US justice, risking his right to enter the US.
Ricardo pulled his car to the left, to not block the lane, and went to an ATM to remove 6,000 pesos, and along with that and 1,500 peso and US$50 dollars from his wife, paid the bribe. Then the blanket vendor moved the cones to allow him to pass.
In a poll by ZETA at the busiest border crossing in the world, drivers as well as Tijuana municipal police, said that this type of extortion happens daily, "at least two cases of this are reported every week," said a police officer named Arredondo, who opted to not state his full name for fear of reprisals.
Mexico: Saw another dead body tonight.:
CoconutB, I suppose I could do just as you say and shut up and go away, but I really don't care what you think. It doesn't matter to me. For all I know you actually live in Alaska and have a tough winter ahead of you and you're a bitter about that. I have decided to continually post the harsh realities that I experience here in Mexico for the benefit of those that are interested in reading about it.
