Bermuda: Visiting:
Check the laws.
Bermuda: Have to cut my own hair:
Hi Steve
Ask a friend to send you a good pair of cutting shears because even a pair of scissors will cost you $50 in Bermuda.
There us NO cheap place. Haircuts are about $100 disgusting dollars. No way out of it. Just one of the reasons I left.
Bermuda: Meeting other Expats:
Hello from an Ex-Pat American:
While living in Bermuda (I have since returned to the States) I found it very difficult to meet other ex-Pats.
However:
1. The American Club organizes events around U.S. holidays, and I believe it welcomes ex-pats from other countries;
2. The International Women's Club (IWC) (a.k.a. Rich Husband's Club (RHC)) welcomes women of all ages from all countries. The IWC sponsors many events and is involved in philanthropic activities. It is a great group if you don't have to work and have a lot of time and money on your hands.
3. The Bermuda Music and Drama Society (BMDS), is fantastic if you are artistic or creative. BMDS was my life line to sanity on many a lonely night on this dark island. BMDS sponsors many social events. You don't have to be talented in the arts, but it helps. I highly recommend this organization.
All of these clubs are Google-able.
Good luck!
Bermuda: Likelihood of partner getting job:
Dear Natbox:
It is illegal to look for a job on the island. All work must be secured prior to arriving with work permits already issued. Also, it is illegal to change jobs or to work AZ second job. You are at the mercy of your employer. Should your existing position not work out, and should you want to remain in Bermuda, you will need to leave Bermuda, look for a job in Bermuda while living outside Bermuda, and start the work permit and immigration process all over again.
The only way to avoid this is for your partner to secure n on line or virtual job.
Best of luck! After 6 months of near starvation and pseudo homelessness, I returned to the States.
Bermuda: Bring Bicycle to Bermuda:
Again, I agree with Lyn2016.
Riding a bicycle in Bermuda alone is akin to suicide as the roads are very narrow; about 16 feet to support two lanes of opposing traffic with no shoulder trapped by stone walls.
There are no sidewalks. Don't think you are going to commute to your job by bike and live.
There are, however, avid cycling clubs that ride early morning weekends on roads less traveled - the airport, for example. You to make a concerted effort, and have to ride as an athletic feat, and not as a means of transportation.
Bermuda: keep US internet job?:
Dear Salamander:
I was in a similar situation. I had a job on Bermuda and my husband wanted to trade via the internet. On-line or virtual work is permissible.

Bermuda: Safety on the Island:
Hello Vzai:
I, too, was creeped out by the darkness of Bermuda. I lived on Morgan;s Road and on Longford Road and felt uneasy everytime I can home from work ;late. The island, however, is safe. Nevertheless, I kept a flashlight and a phone light with me at all times and shone the flashlight around as I walked. I alsi walked in the middle of the road until a car came so I was not near hedges pr walls. The lack of street lights is very disconcerting to a city girl. If you are in a good neighborhood you should be fine. Buy the biggest flashlight you can find.
Best of luck,
U.S. Ex-Pat
Bermuda: Rent an apartment in Hamilton City:
Hi Steve:
I would suggest subscribing to Emoo Bermuda which functions as a Craig's List for the island. You may alos want to subscribe to the "Royal Gazette" which also has classifieds. Check the ferry schedules for the islands' parishes. Also check the crime stats. You're a guy so you really don't have to worry about crime - but those stats may be a good thing to have in your back pocket - next to your wallet.
Bermuda: Cell phone service:
Dear Zippy 63 and Everybody:
Yes, there are two cell phone companies. The important thing is to unlock your current phone and throw away the key. Be sure to disconnect service from your originating country 0 at least of that country is the U.s. My service provider was charging me every time I made a phone call even with a Bermuda phone even with the phone unlocked. Have a long, detailed conversation with both your existing and your Bermuda service so you don;t get billed twice. I learned the hard way. Get the terms in writing.
Digicel and Cell One are comparable - go with the best deal. and remember, there is tax on phone calls.
Bermuda: Minimum annual salary:
You will need a minimum an actual minimum of %50,000 for one person. Also insist that your employer find you housing as housing is expensive and very limited. Unlike any place I traveled or lived in the world Bermuda has been the most expensive and least accessible for relocation.
Best of luck to you!
