Belize: Where to get shampoo etc.:
Plenty of stores around In Corozal. 2 we used were Seasons and Roshnie which are near Scotia bank, a block apart from each other. For the last week long visit we did in Feb/Mar of 2017 I wore sandals, no socks, jeans and short sleeve shirts. I brought a hat but didn't use it.
Belize: Beaches in Corozal:
We've stayed at The Almond Tree resort. There is a small sandy beach there. The bay has nice soft sand but there definitely are not miles and miles of beaches. 10-100 foot beach is the biggest we saw. That being said you definitely can get in the water and it's much warmer than our nearest ocean at Long Island Sound.
Belize: Hopkins:
Wow, I'd take Destiny's advice and not listen to North American's, as she is one.
So am I. We visited Belize for 3 single day trips, years apart, starting in 2003, then last fall in Nov 2016 visited Corozal for a week. We followed that up this Feb/March with another trip to San Ignacio and Corozal again. At no time did we feel unsafe or threatened. Everyone we encountered, both locals and expats, were very friendly. Destiny is correct in that a move like this is not for everyone. Your best bet is to visit for a while to determine for yourself. Don't go to vacation, go to research. In the Corozal area we found ourselves a local guide who showed us lots of different things and helped us to understand how things worked. We spent a day with him, and other days with a couple different real estate agents too. You're right that crime is everywhere. Have some street smarts and you'll be fine. Most crime in Belize appears to be related to drugs or altercations between those who know each other. Random people tend not to be victims, but this is also true elsewhere too, no?
Belize: Canadian - Long Term Rental:
Can you say how much the rent is for the 4 mile lagoon place?
When we visited Corozal last fall we looked at rentals just to see what you got for your money. We weren't ready to rent yet. We saw nice places for 900, 500, and 375 a month. That last one was a great deal for the folks who were just moving in and I have no idea how often a deal like that comes along. Free wifi with the owner living upstairs. They had the ground floor of the house with two bedrooms. There was a park across the road that ran for 75 feet and then there was the ocean. There are all different prices but some are word of mouth and not on the internet. Happy hunting!
Belize: weeklong visit #2 - San Ignacio/Corozal:
Hello all,
I'm looking for helpful hints/contacts for the San Ignacio area. We'll be there Saturday afternoon on Feb 25th until early in the morning on Tuesday the 28th when we head up to Corozal.
We spent a week in Corozal last November, looking at rentals/houses/land. We want to do the same thing in the San Ignacio area. Looking to relocate in 2020 and trying to get our ducks in a row now. Having already been to Corozal we're pretty much all set with realtors and locals in Corozal to help guide us to the right people but need those contacts in San Ignacio.
Belize: Well said to Steve:
Brad and Lorraine, small world as we too are from CT. Good luck in April. We fly down next Saturday and will spend a couple of days in San Ignacio and then a few more in Corozal. This forum has helped us meet up with some helpful people (Hi Ken), who have and will guide us around. Your visit will help you decide. We spent a week in Corozal last November too. The beaches aren't like where you are headed but it still is ocean and we find prices to be affordable. While we also don't need big box stores they won't be far from us as the Mexico border is right there. We can accept the trade off of fluffy towels for retiring ten years earlier than if we stayed in the States.
Belize: Immigration Requirements after 6 months:
I've heard of this and asked a few people, including people in-country during our November visit. Can a married couple have one person do the QPR with no intention of working while the other person goes the permanent resident path? Can that person granted permanent residency, after waiting 5 years for citizenship then after obtaining citizenship have their QRP enabled spouse become a citizen too, due to being married to a citizen. And if this is possible, Are there past duty fees for what was originally brought in?
Belize: Planning our future in Belize:
We've been looking at Belize for a year. visited for a day 3 times, then finally in November spent almost a week. We've already booked flights and places to stay for February as we saw nothing that said "run away" from this idea. I've followed the news in Belize by subscribing to the topic "belize" in google news, which I get on my phone and computer. We spent close to a year doing internet research, knowing some items were older as you've found out too. After that it became time to do an "in person" boots on the ground inspection. We hooked up with kenubelizeit for a day and toured the Corozal area checking our pharmacy prices, land, houses, etc. Well worth the time and thanks again Ken.
Belize: S&P downgrade:
What are local and expat feelings on the downgrade to ccc+ on the credit rating for Belize? Are there any concerns? Will it effect property prices? Govt services? Taxes? Do people feel nothing will change for them personally or will it effect them in some way?

Belize: Covintec SCIP construction:
I searched the forums but only found a couple of posts from over a year and a half ago. I'm wondering if anyone has any updated information:
On our last visit I saw a house being constructed with Covintec Structural Concrete Insulated Panels (SCIP). They have a wire mesh on either side of styrofoam that has concrete which is then sprayed or troweled on. In February we plan on looking into the building process. Wiring, framing, and plumbing I can do myself. Having knowledgeable/skilled concrete workers would be desirable. Does anyone know if working with these panels is commonplace or something people would have to be trained on the job for? What is the rental market like? Can bobcat/backhoes and concrete sprayers, mixers and air compressors be rented or are these generally owned by individuals? Are there any recommended sources for construction workers in the Corozal area that might be familiar with this process? ...thanks!
