Ecuador Welcome Forum: golf in Montecristi?:

And on a less quarrelsome note, my wife and I are travelling to Ecuador in February and March of this coming year (2018). This is an exploratory trip but we expect to spend most of March exploring the coastal areas as that is where we see ourselves most likely settling at some point. We will definitely want to check out the golf course at Montecristi while we are there and hoping someone can give us some information about the course. I believe I read someone post that ex-pats can golf on Tuesdays and Fridays for $50, and that included cart rental. Is that still true? Are there clubs to rent, and do they have left-handed clubs to rent (my wife plays left-handed)? I know it is still more than ten months away but is there anyone here who might be interested in golfing with my wife and me when we are there? We would sure like to meet some ex-pats while we are down there.

Ecuador Welcome Forum: Private Tutor/ English Language Instructor available!:

Kimac, a bit off topic but I'm wondering what you (or anyone) might know about getting Spanish lessons (Spanish for gringos) in Ecuador. Only in the larger cities? What sort of cost?

Ecuador Welcome Forum: Finalized our trip:

Hey oldsoldier, I’ll be interested in reading your posts of your experience. My wife and I are planning a six-week trip in January/February and will be following a route close to yours. Land in Guayaquil and then bus it to Cuenca for a week stay. After that to Loja and Vilcabamba for another week, and then down to the coast (Machala, Salinas, Manta and Bahia de Caraquez). We will partake in one organized tour in Cuenca through the hotel we plan to stay at, Hotel Otorongo ( http://www.hotelotorongo.com/ ) but we have no definitive plans or schedules after that other than wanting to see the places listed. We are also considering retiring there in few years. Really looking forward to reading your impressions.

Ecuador Welcome Forum: Pidiendo ayuda por favor:

Hola mis amigos. Tengo un gran favor que preguntar. My wife and I (Canadians in our 60s) are planning to travel to Ecuador for six weeks this coming January and February for a “boots on the ground” exploratory trip considering the idea of becoming ex-pats there. We are thinking of flying in and out of Guayaquil. We figure that from there we could easily get to Cuenca, stay a week, and then head to Loja and Vilcabamba before heading down to explore the coast. We were hoping to rent a condo in Salinas or somewhere along the coast for the month of February, and then just strike out from wherever we were on day and overnight trips. I do want to get as far as Manta, maybe even Bahia de Caraquez, and I especially want to check out the golf course at Monte Christi. We figure it would also be easy enough to get back to Guayaquil from the coast when it came time to fly home. Since this is an exploratory trip we would really like to connect with some ex-pats before and then when we are there. Maybe someone could give us ideas on where to stay, be willing to hook up with us for lunch and/or a beer, and maybe someone would even be open to playing a round of golf at Monte Christi with us. That would be fantastic. I would really appreciate hearing from some of you fine folk. Mucho gracias. Steve

Mexico: Effects of policies of new administration on lives of expats living in Mexico?:

I know I have previously made my opinion of the current administration in the US pretty clear but I am not here to start a political debate or offend anyone. I really am interested in what impact there might be in the way us gringos are perceived in Mexico because I really am interested in considering Mexico as an option for relocation. From what I have read here the proximity and climate are great incentives for me. I understand the benefit of being non-assuming and respectful, and my wife and I plan on doing whatever is needed and possible on our part to adjust and fit in (learn the local culture, language, etc.). I’d really like to know what specific areas or community’s expats endorse and why. I would also like to know if driving my car through the States and into Mexico would be a prudent option. Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated. Gracias.

Mexico: Puerto Vallarta Expats - Who Rented, who bought:

If someone wouldn't mind, I'd also like an idea on what a person could expect to pay for rent in PV. Are there condos to rent?

Ecuador: Expat meeting locations:

I’m in a similar boat – about two or three years (or one bad week at work) away from retirement. I have researching Ecuador for some time now, but we’ve made plans for our first “boots on the ground” exploratory trip in January/February this upcoming year (and intend to spend every following winter doing the same). We plan to spend six weeks and hope to spend some time in Cuenca, Loja, and Vilcabamba before making it to the coast to spend some time there. We still have a lot we want to learn before we get there (information on getting around, where to go, what to do, etc.) and we’re really hoping to hook up with some of you ex-pats once we are down there; maybe share lunch or a drink and hear your stories. Still ten months away but soon enough to start getting more serious about our planning I figure. We’re getting very excited.

Mexico: Anti-Amer.sentiment in the Riviera Maya:

I understand, accept and appreciate that this board is not the venue for political discussion, but as a Canadian who is seriously investigating options for relocation to warmer climes and a simpler lifestyle I have to consider the impact of this new government in America. I think it would be naïve to think this (what could easily be described as) fascist regime will not impact the way we gringos are looked upon. I have travelled before and I am an easy-going, respectful and tolerant person who is open to adapting to the norms and expectations of wherever I am considering myself to be the guest or visitor and behaving accordingly. I’m not going to have a sign on my forehead explaining all that though. I’m going to look just like any other gringo – even one who might have voted for that scary guy.

Ecuador Welcome Forum: Expats to Mexico?:

My wife and I are planning to travel from Canada to Ecuador for a six-week, “boots on the ground” exploratory tour. We have long thought of retirement there, and while being able to know and associate with ex-pats is a plus, if we end up doing the permanent resident thing we certainly don’t want to separate ourselves from the Ecuadorians. Mexico has emerged as another option to consider though, for several of the reasons already mentioned (eg. proximity, etc.), and we might make the same sort of trip there the following winter. One of the ideas that intrigued me was the possibility of driving down the west coast of the States and all the way to Puerto Vallarta (or wherever). Is that possible? Is it safe? The plus for us is we would be able to load the car with so much more than we could reasonably carry by plane. Plus, I have a touring car that is quite enjoyable to drive on the highway. This might be a problem though – as it does stand out and perhaps I would be asking for trouble by doing this. Thoughts?

Mexico: Puerto Vallarta real estate listing prices:

Hopefully not too off topic but what about renting in the area? Condos or apartments. Anything decent in the $800 month range? Gracias.
