Mexico: In answer to "have you eexperienced anti amercanism thread.:
The word gringo was used before the Spanish-American war. A linguist explains it thoroughly: https://www.visualthesaurus.com/cm/wordroutes/the-colorful-origin-stories-of-gringo/
Mexico: Crime in Mexico?:
For people anticipating immigrating, I believe media and US government accounts of Mex crime have an outsized effect. For people who've lived in Mexico for a while, the fixation on Mex crime is a bit troublesome. I don't see an easy resolution of the conflict between the two sets of opinions. What I've read is that, just as in the US, some cities, some neighborhoods are more dangerous than others. I am in Xalapa, where taxi drivers who see a woman waiting to cross a street, flick their lights and let her cross. These are sweet, gentle, humane people. That so many Americans think they are dangerous is hurtful. All I can add to the conversation is that if you choose cities outside the drug rings, behave yourself and treat people with respect, you will be reward with such civilized treatment that you will hardly believe it.
Mexico: Trouble settling in Mexico:
If you could link up with an American entrepreneur in Mexico, your income would depend on how well you do your work. In Xalapa where I live, an American man married to a Mexican woman has several businesses: Selling motorized bicycles, renting an apt he owns viaAirBnB and other enterprises directed at people of wealth. I don't know if he would consider helping, but you have to first sell yourself -- show that you have enthusiasm and skills. In this guy's case, it's selling. If you knew how to build and repair bicycles, that would help. Another place to find helpful people is universities. Perhaps you could finish your degree by living with and helping someone in exchange for enough salary to pay your living costs. I have no idea how you find such people, but the many forums for expats should help. Good luck to you. Contrary to one person's suggestion, I have found the "old people" in Xalapa to be full of energy and willigness to help others; that is a significant aspect of community to me.
Mexico: U.S. brokerages and mail forwarding services:
What is the cost of such service from Laredo? Does Mail Box Etc open, scan and email what's in your mail? I need to sign up right away.
Mexico: Mexico options:
Cmdeb: Great news that "we" are protesting. Do you know anyone in Xalapa who is protesting? If no, I'll try to set up something.
I have met no American here (uh oh, I've met only 2 :-0) who favors Trump.
Mexico: Visiting PV in May: fact finding for retirement:
I also expect to fly into PV in a week or so and would like to have recommendations from expats there on a reasonably priced family-owned hotel.
Mexico: non-profit enterprise:
I also am interested in helping in whatever town I choose to live in. I am considering Xalapa, Tulum and even a village south of Puerto Vallarta, Yelapa, Jalisco. The latter asks on its town website for donations to its school. I miss work and want to help.
Mexico: Community Living:
I would be interested if someone else drew up the organizational documents and found the place. I'd prefer not to live in an area thick with ex-pats, but I'd lo be near good medical facilities.
