Portugal: Recommendations for books to learn Portuguese?:

I'm using a free app called Memrise. I really like it. It uses a lot of repetition to drill the words into your memory. So far so good. I've worked through Portuguese 1 and I'm about a third of the way through Portuguese 2.

Portugal: Potential places to live:

My wife and I have been investigating retiring to Portugal for months now, and we're planning a trip to visit places we're interested in. We're focusing on the Silver coast from just north of Lisbon to Viana do Castelo.. Does anyone have any input on the following cities/towns? Obidos, Nazare, Caldas da Rainha, Coimbra, Leiria, Braga, Guimaraes, Porto and Viana do Castelo. We want to be relatively close to the coast and have access to amenities such as decent groceries and hospitals. We've ruled out Lisbon and Cascais as too expensive and the Algarve because it just doesn't appeal to us. Any input on the cities we're looking at would be appreciated.

Portugal: Health Insurance:

Is anyone familiar with Assurmed Europe? I received a quote for health insurance and it looks pretty good. Any input regarding experiences with this company?

Portugal: Housing Question:

My wife and I are looking at some of the online property listings around Coimbra and one thing I've noticed is other than a few houses with radiators I don't see a method of either heating or cooling the houses. I understand lows in the winter can get down into the 40s and highs in the summer can get into the 80s. How are houses heated or cooled in Portugal?

Portugal: Healthcare if you work in Portugal:

I've been reading a lot about healthcare in Portugal. My wife and I are looking to move to Portugal in about 2 years. Am I mistaken in believing that if I work remotely for an American company and pay taxes in Portugal I will then be eligible for public healthcare in Portugal? I have a pre-existing condition that will be excluded from insurance and the only way I would be able to access treatment would be through the public healthcare system.

Portugal: Fatal Infections in hospitals:

I don't know where you're from but about 100,000 people die in U.S. hospitals every year from infections they got while in the hospital. Portugal is listed by the WHO as the 12th best healthcare in the world. The U.S is listed as the 31st best. I'd take my chances.

Portugal: Non-habitual residence regime:

One of the statements on the website posted by OldPro states "Successful NHRs will have access to all the benefits of an ordinary Portuguese tax resident including healthcare." Is this true? This is a huge benefit from my viewpoint.
