Belize: Scary-San Pedro Video:
Happily, charges were files against the officers. https://www.breakingbelizenews.com/2017/04/03/police-officers-charged-excessive-force-san-pedro/
Belize: Those Posting Not Living In Belize:
I don't care whether any particular comment is positive, or negative. I don't care whether the author is in Belize, or left Belize, or never been to Belize. I care whether the statements made in the post are true.
If you don't like what someone on this forum has to say, prove them wrong. Call them out for lazy thinking. Point out that they are peddling anecdotes when there's a bigger picture of facts. Call them out for blatant racism when that's necessary. (Neolithic? Really?) But have something to say, other than "I don't want to hear that."
Belize: Boomer couple from LA:
"The probability of a hurricane making landfall in Belize in any given year is 17%. A hurricane hasn't hit Belize in August in well over 100 years, but the prime storm season arrives in Belize and the Western Caribbean region in September and October. Of the 20 hurricanes that have made landfall in Belize in the past 117 years, 17 or 85% have arrived in September and October."

In a four-night stay last month, I didn't observe any mosquitoes (though I know they were there). I did see a monster beetle about three inches long, but I didn't trip over it so no harm.
Every native Belizean I spoke to denies that racism is a problem in Belize.
Belize: Considering moving:
I just got back from a short stay in the San Ignacio area. Saw no biting insects. Maybe one or two bit me in four days of running around in the jungle. At least at the place where we were staying, customer service was insanely great.
Belize: Cats:
I live in the country in Iowa, and don't let my cats outdoors because there are so many predators (hawks, eagles, owls, coyotes, bobcats) that would be happy to eat them. I don't think they'd be safer outdoors in a tropical rain forest!
Belize: Best banks in belize?:
I would prefer a credit union to a bank. Doubly so after the banking regulations in the U.S. get shredded, which should be happening any day now. There are at least two credit unions in Belize to choose from.
Belize: Currency:
Please expand on this. Why would someone give me BZD 2.15 for USD 1.00? Are people hoarding US dollars in expectation of a devaluation?
Belize: Down to the Banana Republic...:
It can't be good to have an more than $100 million get sucked out of the government's accounts. Steps are being taken to protect assets that reside in U.S. jurisdiction, though I have no idea what steps those might be, or how effective they are. Reciting those facts isn't an insult to Belize, or to people who live there.
I haven't heard anyone who knows macroeconomics say what will happen then. The government is having trouble making its next bond payment, but that was true before the judgement. There may be a devaluation of the Belize dollar, but that was also true before the judgement. I haven't heard anything yet that would stop me from coming, or make me rush for the exits if I were already there.
Belize: Starting a Food Pantry:
Don't want to throw cold water on what sounds like a good project. I'm not Christian but it sounds like something I'd be willing to support.
That said, I'm curious to know what poverty is like in Belize. Is food the biggest unmet need? Has anyone tried cash grants to the poor in Belize, the way GiveDirectly (https://www.givedirectly.org/) has done in east Africa? Anyone here have a conversation with a poor Belizian lately?
Belize: Retiring and renting - Corozal District:
Is there an area that seems to have consistently lower humidity and temperatures?
