Fiji: Introduction: Aussie making the move:

Sa Yadra Not much jobs in recruitment and counseling, but there are few head hunters around. Firstly, to work you must have work permit or be citizen. I am 13 year married to local, but still have to get work permit as non citizen. As spouse I have right to reside only, not work, not study, not volunteer, not research. If your partner is defacto you may not qualify spousal exemption. I suggest you spend some time at immigration to find out how your situation will be determined. Thus I started my own consulting business...not cheap and have to go through InvestmentFiji. Best of luck.

Fiji: US Resident Retiring to Fiji:

USA taxes your world wide income, but there is exemption on FOREIGN earned income at around $100,000. Thus if you are earning income from USA, you pay taxes in USA. If you are retiring, not likely you would be earning income in Fiji, so no need to file in Fiji. For the exemption, there is a cap of number of days you can be in the USA - I think 31 days. Look up Substantial Presence Test. Note you will need to get permit to reside in Fiji to live here..

Fiji: CONTAINER SHIPPING:

Pretty easy. Find a local freight forwarder in your home town and they can coordinate shipping. I have had both LCL and FCL from Australia, USA, China, and Korea. Just be aware often they change ships and may be delayed. From USA can take 2-3 months as sometimes via NZ and other via Australia. Although there are now two vessels a month that stop in Fiji southbound. IF in USA, I use Carotrans and MainFreight. From Australia I use Seaway. If you need contacts let me know.

Fiji: Land Sales Amendment Act 2014:

At this time government has not determined how they will enforce such law. However, they are trying to prevent land speculation that had driven up the prices of freehold land in Fiji whereby locals can not afford such. Fiji welcomes investment, thus why they are trying to make sure those non-citizens are truly investing not just speculating. Government has recognise the problem of getting houses by the deadline. Thus just need to submit a plan on what you intend to build, and start the process. Those that 'lose value' - value is just a number, but you still have the same land. There was previously a question about 'integrated tourism development. The Minister of Lands has issued a letter confirming that Taveuni Estates does not meet such. However, they have not clearly identified what will meet such definition. Note, the act is ONLY for FREEHOLD 'residential' land. Although about 9% of land if freehold, over half of that is tied up in large government owned estates such as Yaqara and FNU Ag in Navua. It should also be pointed out, Fiji does not have a land tax, thus land speculation is major drain on economy and public resources.
