Actually I'm one of those new retired expats that does not drink heavily, but I'm in Hanoi. Maybe we could form a group that encompasses all of Vietnam. I've been here since late Nov '16, and I plan to make Hanoi my permanent home.

Vietnam: Train vs Air:

Recently the main line (HCMC-Danang-Hanoi) or Reunification Express has had major cleanliness problems. Just read Tripadvisor and weep at the reports of vermin on these trains. I personally would only consider taking the Hanoi-Lao Cai route or very very short runs on the main line.
