Cost of apartments is considerably less in Paris... almost 25% so that is where you should see some savings.
Consumer prices are higher in paris including restaurants.
I agree that it's probably light on the compensation and they are probably trying to leverage the appeal of living in Paris to encourage you to take less money.

It's not a guarantee, but you're well on your way. You need to demonstrate that you can support yourself, that you are from an eligible country, among other requirements. Contact an immigration lawyer quickly because he or she will be aware of the most current laws/regulations, and the U.S. approves more than will be actually granted in the end. Don't drag your feet!

Insurance is probably a tough shot at getting a visa. Do you work for a large insurer? What country are you from?

Do research on Australian companies with operations in the U.S. If you can get a job with them, you might be able to get a expat post in the United States at some point. You can still try to get a job directly in the U.S. with other companies while you wait. It's a two pronged approach!
I used to work for a GE company, and when doing yearly paperwork, they would ask if you were willing to consider expatriate positions.

I think it's always a great idea to have the international permit, whether you need it or not. Having it often will get you on your way a lot quicker if you are pulled over for any reason.
