Brazil: Legal issue: Adding me to ownership of Mom's house in Brazil:

Looking for advice: my American mom with residency in Brazil is working on giving me PoA, and I'm suggesting that she put me on the actual title/ownership of the house and property to avoid any future problems. I am American and live in NY, I do have a CPF and hope to one day establish residency in Brazil. Any advice? If I'm not mistaken, me and my brother by Brazilian law must inherit 50% of the property no matter what, no matter what is said in any will or who else claims anything, where we live, or our residency or citizenship status. (My Mom is more interested in giving me most of the rights/property, in terms of decision making). Also, any leads on lawyers who could assist in this, either in US or Brazil, would be helpful. Obrigada!

Brazil: British families in Bhia:

Hi, I was just in Ilheus in December - my Mom lives about 5 hours south near Porto Seguro. I just went there to check out the area, I dont know that much about it. We stayed at a beautiful pousada 28km south of the city.

Brazil: Recife/Olinda pre/during carnaval:

Looking for cheap yet comfortable lodging in Olinda (or Recife) Feb. 26-Mar. 6 (pre-carnival until Carnival Monday) 2010. I'll probably be going into the interior for a few days during that period (to investigate/play maracatu rural). If you have any suggestions please let me know, thanks. My mom lives in Bahia and I'll be going there after (we're American), but I'm trying not to pay a million dollars to be in Recife at that time.

Brazil: International phone use in Brazil:

I'm US-based but want to use a phone in Brazil. My carrier is Sprint and I'm available for a phone upgrade -- does anybody know if there are phones I can bring to use in Brazil -- what would I do -- switch out a SIM card? Also if I get a blackberry at work possibly I could do that? Otherwise I've got to rent a phone

Brazil: Permanent Visa for investors:

I am an American looking to move to Bahia (Cabralia, north of Porto Seguro). My mother (American) is retired there. I am not yet near retirement but could invest in property or possibly a business. I have read about the $50,000 investment required for this visa, but I need more information. I called the consulate here in New York, and they said they could not tell me anything at all about this and it all had to be handled in Brazil. I would have to hire a lawyer there in order to arrange things with the Banco Central. My mom is there already so that is not unmanageable, but I would like to find out what can be done here. I do intend to get my CPF when I go to Brazil in June. I have read that this visa is fairly straightforward. Can anybody give me advice on how to go about finding out the real deal and what's the smartest way to go about this? I'm not looking to open a huge business or make a profit -- I don't have that sort of funds. I just want to live there and this sounds like a reasonable opportunity.
