China: Area Advice:

Hello from a fellow "Soon To Be ExPat" I am unfamiliar with the area you are going but would like to suggest you get (if you don't already have one) a hand held translator device. I just got mine and it is going to be a sanity saver! We are also going to be in an area where there aren't any ExPats close. There are several options out there - I got mine from Aim High, Inc. at www.aimhi.com and we ordered item AM101 w/WordPoint @ $179.99 USD Good luck and try to stay positive ... another bit of advise I recently received is once you/we get there - build a close friendship with two local chinese and in time this relationship will be priceless and open doors that would not necessarily open. :-)

China: Cell Phones in China:

I can bring my cell phone (blackberry) from the US but the charges will be sky high! Does anyone use a local service and what is best cell phone out there (in China) and what about language (English) issue? Also, has anyone used the emergency "011" for translation concerns w/police or other situations?

China: Moving to ChangPing to Work in Xinhu Industrial Park, Dengwu Village, Qiaotou Town:

Questions: 1) For those of us who do not speak, read or write Chinese - how does one get around? Buy food, etc. 2) Does anyone use the hand held interpretation devices - if so are they any good? 3) Does anyone drive and if so do you have GPS for your area in China (is it in English) and is it any good? 4) We are interested in feedback from anyone that has been to or worked in these areas listed above. What can we expect - we are unable to locate ExPats in this area and understand we may not have all options available to us yet ~ any information / suggestions is most appreciated.

China: English Speaking Moms in HK:

Hi Tammi ~ I lived on Discovery Bay in Hong Kong (and the Philippines) a few years ago and will return as an ExPat to live in S.E. China in a few months. When in the Philippines I was a member of the "American Womens Club of the Philippines" and when I lived in Hong Kong I was a member of the "International Womens Club" and look forward to joining again. Check with the American Consulate for contact information as I do not have this info at this time. If I find out anything else ~ I'll let you know. :-) PS I do not know the ages of your 2 children ("stay at home mom" leads me to believe they are not in school yet) but be aware there is an "acceptance" process to enter the schooling systems there. They have schools for many nationalities such as German, US, etc. Take care, Karen
