Global Expat Forum: Want expert consultation on expatriating:
Hi,
We were in your situation a few years back and after all our expat searching I wrote a workbook/course to help you sort out your needs and wants.
I would love to talk to you about it all. My website is undergoing a huge reconstruction this week-- of course. :)
You can see a peek at the mix of old and new partially posted set of pages.
PLEASE NOTE: You can't buy from this site at the moment.-- I need a couple of days to get to that point.
Here is some eye candy and ideas about things to look over:

Global Expat Forum: Short term nesting:
Hi Sue, meet another Sue.
Yes --we do similarly to yourselves only my musical conductor husband seems incapable of uttering the word 'no'. So we do our globe trotting to whoever wants to hire him for workshops and concerts. While there I work and write.
Meantime back home we have a house and a small apartment rental attached to our house. generally we have teachers or others who want to try out the expat life in Chile there.
We'd love to meet an swap stories and ideas.
Suzie
Global Expat Forum: Looking for a lake:
If you are prepared to learn Spanish you can check out Ecuador,Bolivia and Chile.
Chile is the most stable, democratic and least corrupt of the lot. They also have wonderful lakes and a mediterrainean climate. Downside is that it is a little more expensive than the 3rd world countries that are so cheap. It is cheaper than the US and healthcare is really good.
We did exhaustive thinking andsearching and then visited a number of candidates. I encourage you to do the same! Good luck!

Global Expat Forum: How to decide?:
Good for you, you seem to be going about making your choice the right way. Putting lots of research into you destination(s) is really the only way to go IMHO.
We have been in your shoes and the best advice I can offer is to get really organized about what you want in life. It sounds like you have some of that going on and I encourage you to do even more.
Our last move has been to Chile as it suited our work and interests in art and music. (You should have seen the 'what our new home must have' list --- LOL)
Your work skills may be put to use here and your orientation not a big issue socially. You will find Chile is not a huge 'bargain' in living costs although less than most of the US/EU. We liked it because it is very socially and financially stable and modern. The peso does not swing wildly like other SA currencies and there is law and order here with a decent police force. (Don't get me wrong there is no paradise anywhere IMO but we enjoy it enough here that we are building a house after 6 years of renting.)
If you think about coming down to visit drop me a private note.
Best of luck in your search,
Suzie

Global Expat Forum: HIV medicatio:
Two possible choices here. I know that Argentina has low cost drugs of several persuasions. We live in Chile which has medical that surpasses any I got in the US. Drs often speak English along with a number of other languages and and are up to date with medical techniques on a worldwide basis and care is much cheaper and very modern. We hop across the border to Argentina to get the cheaper drugs in Argentina as it is an hour from Santiago. We like the government and social situation better in Chile but the drug prices in Argentina :)
Be aware though that a number of countries all around the Pacific rim will have to charge a lot more for drugs locally if that new TPP trade agreement goes through. Can drop an email to your congressman on that one please? Each country signing will have to charge what the US does if that piece of sh-- goes through. Good luck on your searches!

Global Expat Forum: Expats Anywhere, Advice!:
It's a funny thing but most people don't frequent these general boards once they actually move. They want data b4 they go but then often don't pay back once moved to help out someone else.
Glad to hear you are going visiting altho sorry to tell you IMHO cruises are the worst way to get a feel for a place because you get no alone time to go explore what a place is really like. I mean do you visit the 'touristy places' where you live right now? I bet you avoid them like the plague when possible. So do real people who don't have tourist income dependent jobs.
Why do you like the idea of the Carribean? There are many lovely, beachy warm places with genuine culture that isn't steeped in the same problems as you would deal with living there, nor so small. I like getting in a car and going places-- Again IMHO! :)
I would make a list of what you think it is you want in your life. I bet hurricanes and humidity aren't on the list. lol But what is? Then look off the beaten path. Hop on a plane and go to the local places expats in that country/city frequent--you will get the real story warts and all. Ecuador is wonderful, so are Chile and Argentina. If you look over my older posts you will get an eyeful of why we chose to retire in Chile after visiting 7 countries, including all the usual popular retirement destinations. What it costs us, why we love it here, why we are building a house here and what are the warts one has to put up with....
Look for forums in Yahoo, etc for people who are living in your possible new destination and look at the conversations but don't expect many answers for people who are 'shopping'. People living in a place get tired of answering the same basic dopey questions and want answers to specifics like 'anybody know a good English speaking accountant, where is a good jazz club, want a good steak? etc. But all this gives you data about a place. Unless you are just going to go lay on a beach for the next years and do little else but hang out with other expats who are doing the same.
Good luck on your search,

Global Expat Forum: where to retire:
Hi, please make sure you are OK with humidity if you go to Panama, and parts of Ecuador. Climate is ok in several parts but they are smaller cities with less to do.
If you haven't done it yet please make lists of your 'must have and must NOT have issues' before you go much further. Don't forget that there is much more of SA that is great to live in. Do LOTS of research not just the more obvious destinations. For instance Uruguay, Chile and Boliva are lovely to live in, stable and beautiful..........

Global Expat Forum: Hello!:
Lucky you! You will find many places to accomplish that..
Please make sure that you make a list of things you want in your life and things you do NOT want in your life. (Maybe a beach maybe mountains, maybe 4 seasons but not too much of each one, things to do that are of value....etc. It sounds obvious but it really isn't and it is usually a longer list than you realize. Then start looking for good places to meet that list. Of course you know it is much more complex than that and it is a big decision---but that will get you started.
Best of luck on your search.
