Jamaica: Who hear has actully moved:

I am an expat who lives in Kingston and moved here from the UK about 4 months ago. I have had a very positive experience to date, and my husband and I are both very settled and enjoying life here. We also bought our two cats with us from the UK without any problems (although the quarantine facilities are not great - at least they only had 14 days there). If anyone would like any guidance or advice about relocating or general queries about Kingston etc, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to help you!

Jamaica: going to Jamaica:

I moved here from the UK about 3 months ago, and am very pleased I made the move. But you do need to do some research before you move out here - particularly in view of where you want to live. There are lots of nice safe areas, but also (like most cities) places you really don't want to be. I would recommend that for peace of mind you live in a gated community which means you have 24 hour security. There are lots of these complexes around the city, and a lot of them have shared swimming pools, bar areas etc too. Regarding a car - I think that buying a car here is very expensive (compared to the UK) although the running costs are much cheaper. We did look at importing my husbands car here but that wasn't really a viable option as the import duties are high. I hope this helps, and you enjoy your move here. Jane

Jamaica: Jamaica PETS passport:

I am in the process of moving to Jamaica from the UK (next month) and am bringing my cats with me. My understanding is that Jamaica will still only accept cats & dogs from the UK and nowhere else. Although they are listed as a member of the PETS scheme, this does not really make sense as they will not allow any animals in (including from the UK) that have had a rabies vaccination (which is a condition of the PETS scheme). Luckily my cats had not been vaccinated so they will just have a 14 day quarantine, but it does mean that if I want to bring the cats back to the UK in a few years time they will not be allowed back under the PETS scheme so will have 6 months quarantine at this stage! I think its madness too, but I don't think there are any plans to make changes at the moment!

Jamaica: Relocating from UK:

Hi, myself and my husband are relocationg to Kingston in April for 3 years as I have accepted a job there. I am trying to find out as much information as possible before we go and would love to get in touch with anyone who can help us. We provisionally have a house provided from my company in Long Mountain, but I can't find much about this on the internet - is this area ok? My husband does not have a job yet (he is an electrician) so any suggestions on job agencies/recruitment sites would be great. We are both in our early 30s with no kids and have a great social life in the UK. Can anyone tell us where the best (and safest!) places to go so we can meet new friends. Many thanks, Jane
