El Salvador: Very unimpressed with El Salvador:

Your husband must love you...

El Salvador: I have a lot of Tattoos:

If your not latino you should have no problem, but much will depend on where you are traveling to. If going to intercity places keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings. If going to the ruta de flores or places like Suchitoto you should have no problems. If you are latino be carefull on the local buses an d if your tats could be confused with gang tats, you may want to cover em up. Enjoy the trip Rpbroz

El Salvador: First Holiday Visit to El Salvador:

Hi the decameron resort offers the easy tours at a decent price. If interested in more personalized service look for me at gringo tours, Francisco Tobar who can be found online as the Extreme Tour or my friend Benjamin Rivera. If Birders Benjamin and I would be your best option. Be open to spending a night or two away from the resort and that opens up options like Suchitoto where I have been living for the past 10 plus years, the impossible park on an overnight is also an option and for civil war history if interested Perquin, all difficult to do on day outings. For personalized full day outings(10/14 hours) expect to pay from $150-$250 for groups of up to 3. Enjoy El Salvador and if you need any further information feel free to send a pm to rpbroz@gmail.com

El Salvador: Best hotel in san salvador:

For one of the best check out the ILB botique hotel in Escalon. For nice but less expensive Villa Angel and for nice in B&B type Posada del Angel. I have had clients in all and all were very happy. Enjoy El Salvador

El Salvador: Day Trips?:

Hi Robert, I don't think this is the place to start a tour business but for general information you might contact someone like myself that has been offering tours for the past 8 years. If your just doing outings with friends from SS the easiest is just going. The Archeology day trip can include if well planned all four major sites, two in Chalcuapa, San Andres and Joya de Ceren. For the indigo outing the only that I know that offer and 1/2 day activity is Hacienda Los Nacimientos(I do birding tours there) in Suchitoto(where I live and provide both city tours as well as civil war history tours). If going into business there is a niche for business travelers for day trips from SS that are specialized as there are probably 12 or more companies that already offer what you mention. Anyway if you need any details drop me a call at 7860-9435 Robert Broz(Gringo Tours)

El Salvador: Mentor?:

Come, definitely don't worry about volcanoes(yes we did have one that sent some ash into the air around New Years) very rarely do we have problems with storm surge and most rentals are back from the beach. Gangs stick to killing themselves and don't really trouble travelers. For your exploring/traveling hire someone whether it be someone like myself that offers tours or just a driver/guide or rent a car. If you need an idea of different beach areas both to retire to or to stay on this trip feel free to write. You will want to check out places like Suchitoto(at least an overnight) Ruta de Flores, Mayan sites, La Palma San Salvador and if on the East coast Alegria, Jiquilisco and Perquin. Whatever you do I can pretty much guarantee you and the family will enjoy El Salvador(I have for the last 20 yeas, not retired) Regards rpbroz

El Salvador: Job search.. I know I know:

It would be good to let us all know what skills you have. There is work at a decent pay but working Spanish is a must. Looking for something with English only will limit you to the call centers or teaching English. Anyway if you have any sopecial training or skills, willing to learn Spanish you can find work in anything from Non profits to sales. El Gringo in Suchitoto

El Salvador: Any suggestions for how to learn Spanish quickly?:

Hi Juliet, You might do a search on goolge for Salvadorian slang. Why the interest in Santa Ana during the 70s? If visiting in July you should concentrate on current Spanish, or perhaps going to Spanish school while here. There is a good one in my town of Suchitoto. If you need more information or help with planning your trip feel free to write to me directly at rpbroz (at) gmail (dot) com). Regards Robert

El Salvador: Importing a vehicle:

Ok here goes. Are you moving to ES? Are you donating the vehicle? Only vehicles less than 7 years old can be imported and legalized here. If you are moving here it depends what type of visa or residence you will get. Worst case the car gets put in aduanas for a while to determine its value and then you pay the taxes. After that you still have to register it, this is yearly and get you permanent plates. If it is a donation check with the non profit or receiving group to see if they can get the legal work done, this sometimes can take a long time but can also end up having no cost. If you want pm me at rpbroz at gmail.com and let me know more about your situation.

El Salvador: 10 Tips for Living in El Salvador:

Ok lets see, where to start. I am half salvadorean so lets start there. If you are a salvadorean born out side the country the process is easy, we have a beautiful contitution that states that if your mother or father are salvadorean then you have the same rights as salvadoreans born in El Salvador. All you need is a certified(now by homeland security) and translated copy of your birth certificate. This you have seated/registered at city hall in San Salvador where you will then be extended a salvadorean birth certificate. With you new birth certificate you apply for a DUI Documento Unico de Identificacion and a salvadorean passport. You will also need to apply for a NIT numero de identificacion tributario similar to a social security card. With these documents you can work, travel buy property own a business and vote. Ok then if you are not the son or daughter of a salvadorean parent then you have four options: 1) you can apply for a pensionists visa, this will allow you to live indefinatly in El Salvador and buy property, it does not allow you to work, make money, own a business or vote. To apply you have to prove that yopu have a fixed income/retirment from outside the country. 2) there is a second visa for foriegn investors/visa de inversionistas which allows you to live in El Salvador and own and operate a busines, buy, invest, etc. I believe you have to have proof of your financial stabality, a business plan/what type of project, etc you plan to develop. 3) Many come down as tourists, fall in love and get married. The laws here are similar to the US and the process can take as long as 2-3 years before salvadorean citizenship can be obtained 4) Many forieners stay for long periods jsut acting as tourists, leaving the country for a long weekend every time their visa runs out. I have known numerous vvolunteers over my 15 years here that have done just this. It is now much more difficult with the C-4 agreement as visa given to tourist are good for 90 days in Guatemala, El Salvador, Hondurus and Nicaraugua so for those living in El Salvador you have to go to Mexico or Costa Rica...or apply for an extention in one of the C-4 countries, which isn´t always approved. For other general tips I would recommend coming down for an exploritory trip to check out the conditions, different parts of the country, get to know some people and see what opurtunities might interest you. If you are considering moving to El Salvador feel free to write to me directly or post to this forum, there are quite a few expats here, who like myself are will to help.
