Saudi Arabia: What is like to live in Saudi?:

Hi, we have lived in Jubail for about 2 years. you can say Saudi Arabia is one of the safest countries in the world. The western compounds have normal security. Life is not that bad there. Your wife shall know, that she is not allowed to drive there! Most compounds offer a driving service with regular schedules to different markets, malls and groceries. Inside the camp u are allowed to walk normal dressed, but outside your women shall wear abbaya. To wear veil and cover hair is not necessary! Even if some muttawah ask for it, then u better should follow. But so far Jubail is a small town and quite open and not that much rigid then Riyadh. Your wife might be able to work as a teacher if she has profession. Maybe also in one of the hospitals around. But this has to be managed by the sponsor who will grant you iqama. In any case... make sure before thes do the visa for you that u get a contract that allow u to bring your family with you! If u are engineer and have a certification from university the iqama process will be easier. So far we did not note any problems against western people. May I ask which nationality you have? If your wife cant get a job/permission to work she will have plenty of time left :) cuz- despite cleaning, shopping, take care of kids etc ther is not much to do for woman. regards ajaja

Saudi Arabia: Work Visa Classfication...Is it important when working in Saudi?:

Hi, we had same stuff with our Visa.... we are now about to change third time our sponsor. It is important u have some academic graduate. Often the Visa do not mention exactly your labour status. Most imortant is, IF u want your family with you and get a residence permit, that they put in this case or right graduate or labour status, other way is then to fix it in your work contract, that it is allowed to bring ur family with you to Saudi Arabia. Whenever we get some of our workers to Saudi arabia, they also received mostly a classification as "consultant". But they do a job like welding, or stg else. But this Visa are not for long term staying. Mostly this workers have to leave the country after 28 days (crossong the Border to Bahrain will do it) and then they come back, stay a certain period again and then leave again the country. U did not mention how ling u want to stay and work in Saudi arabia... Do u apply for Iqama? I mean for residence permit? I would say this is the most important thing you have to figure out... kind regards Ajaja

Saudi Arabia: medical tests??:

Hi, to make the medical examinaton is really no problem. Go to any hospital and ask for this test. In our area (Jubail) only one hospital around that was allowed to do the test. They need your blood and also urine and stuhl (exkrements). Better to take last one with you when U go :-). They will also send U to X-Ray and they maybe make a test before X-Ray in case of pregnancy. Better U have a mobile (Saudi) with U. They sent all the information in most cases to your mobile!! The results of the test take normally one week. Maybe U need a health insurance from your sponosr. I pay it myself to make this process quicker ;-) It was something around 300 SAR. It is better if U have someone with U who can speak arabic. In most cases English will be enough, but arabic will be better. Wish U luck with the process of Iqama then Greetings Ajaja

Saudi Arabia: Jubail:

Dear Mike, I can't say, that social life is not existing in Jubail. You are male, so you can walk uncovered. For expat women it may be a little harder... I don't know in what compound you will take your accomodation. so I can say, in our compound I feel well, everything is okay there. In my opinion Jubail is a nice place- if you accept the rules in KSA. Maybe it would help to join facebook.com? In this platform you can make contact to people who are living in Jubail. I hope my information helps you anyway.. Greets Ajaja

Saudi Arabia: visa number:

Hi Fefe, all things okay in KSA? Got again Visit Visa... Will be back in KSA next week Thursday or Sunday. Hope you have a nice time there!

Saudi Arabia: Living cost in Riyadh:

Hi, I don't know exactly but try this link: http://www.sbtd.co.uk/Compounds%20EP.htm We live in Al Jubail and we pay 1100,- ¬/Month for a little house with 2 Bedrooms, 1 Kitchen, 1 Bathroom. But prices are different- that belongs to the area and the standard... Internet mostly is available, but it's expensive, especially if you want to have a fast speed. The Voltage of Electricity in the Compounds mostly is 230. But it can be different. The other Voltage is 160 or 190, don't know exactly. Food is not so expensive to buy- it's much cheaper than here in Germany where we come from. The Water which comes out of the tub youn can't drink! You have to buy drinking water- Water is more expensive than petrol:-) The normal water is mostly from desalination plants and is not very good... much lime in it- so called "hard water". You need much more detergent if you wash your clothes- and much more conditioner for your hair also! Hope this would help you...

Saudi Arabia: Family residence Visa:

Hi Folks, my husband is working in al Jubail since September 2007. My first stay in Saudi was in March 2008. Since his company sent him to Jubail it was planned, that I will accompany him. For my first stay in Jubail I only get a visit visa for 3 month. Somebody in my husbands company must have made a mistake, because I had to obtain a residence permit. I leave Saudi on May, 13th. One of the liaison officers had to prepare the exit form paper for the company, my husbands working for, and they told me, that I had to make a copy of my passport with the new exit stamp in it an send it to the company as soon as possible to obtain residence... Now I'm really frustrated... Today I've got an mail from one of the officers who's preparing my return to Saudi... and again something went wrong: The Status of my husband is mentioned as "technichian". So I'm not allowed to get residence? I've to sent again a authorized document of our marriage and Diploma or Educational Certificate, translated in arabic and - maybe - they can make a residence visa for me. Another solution is to obtain again a visit Visa, so that I can return to KSA. Can anyone tell me, what went wrong? How can we change the "status" of my husband? Is it possible? The liaison officer told us at the airport, that we can call him, if we had any trouble with my residence permit. Does he mean we gave him money and everything is okay? I'm really dissapointed this evening... a visit visa ma be a solution, but everytime you have much trouble, coming back again. Did anybody has some experience and is able to help? We planned to stay some years in Saudi Arabia. But at the moment I don't know, how to plan the next steps. Everything seems to be insecure and instable...

Saudi Arabia: Women in Saudi:

Hi Salama, if you have internet use it, to find out as much as you can about living in Saudi Arabia! This will help you in the firts days... Woman are not allowed to work! Maybe you cann arrange a job as a nurse or a teacher. Woman are not allowed to drive! If you go out of your Compound you have to wear the black Abaya! Better you take it on, othwerwise people at the street are staring at you. This is not a nice experience... If you go to a region like Rhyadh you have to wear a scarf also. There are some areas in KSA where life is mor strict. Remember you have to accept, that you live among another culture! People are very friendly and respectful. That's odd, in Germany people are not frinedly, maybe because of the bad wheather.. :-) In your Compound you can wear normal clothes, but be careful... there where other Men from India and Pakistan working in the Compound and they haven't seen their families for a long time. In our Compound the other women don't go swimming, because our pool gets renovated and there where some workers who are looking at them. But you can, no problem... I sometimes find it funny there... I have had more fun in some weeks than in one year in Germany... good luck!

Saudi Arabia: Khobar:

Hi fefe, feel the same in my first weeks. But you can cope with! I'm sure. The most important thing is to have internet, so you have a chance to meet other people. My first weeks are boring also. I cleaned up our house three times a day and waste a lot of cleaner. After one week I knew the whole Compound Area. After three weeks I began to make a little Garden... But, I will be lucky if I can come back to KSA... CU
