About GSJ

Married British born senior executive with multi-cultural experience having worked in several countries including the USA, UK and the Middle East. Mainly in the retail, leisure and hospitality industries. I settled in Germany in 2003 and have lived in several areas predominantly in the north of Germany. I enjoy a great quality of life and share many passions with my wife including all sports and recreation, travel and dogs!

Advice for New Expats

You can not plan or prepare enough! However my key advice would be to open a bank account as soon as is possible. In Germany the use of credit cards is not as widespread as we expect in other EU countries, and many places just take EU debit cards, not credit cards! (for example IKEA do not take credit cards!). Also do not be afraid of language barriers, most Germans can speak English and actually enjoy the practice, therefore the use of DEnglish is widely accepted!

I would love to live in...

Somewhere warm, dry and a great view of the ocean!

Welcome to Germany! My name is Graeme and on behalf of the forum we wish you all the luck and success whilst residing in Germany. If you have any general questions which you feel will help you along whilst you become accustomed to the way of life, do not be afraid of posting a question (someone somewhere may just have the answer!). Good luck.
