Jamaica: Natural Birth options in Kingston?:
I got pregnant with my son shortly after moving to Kingston in 2006. I searched for doulas, midwives, and checked out all the local hospitals. Although there were midwives there were no doulas. Kingston used to have a "natural birthing facility" but it closed down a few years ago. I was diagnosed with Placenta Previa for my first birth, and due to the fact that I may have had to have an early c-section I decided to go back to the states. (It turned out they read the untrasound wrong here and I didn't have one when I arrived in the states.) Anyways, I'm glad I decided to return to the states. I've since attended hospital births here and was very dissatisfied with everything! At Nutall, the nurses were very rude to not only me, but to the mother whom I was helping!!! Not to mention when I visited the nicu ward at UWI (where the only ventilators are located) it was hot, dirty, and there were 5 babies needing to be on the 2 machines. They had hand pumps on the other 3 babies mouths, but they were so understaffed, no one was pumping them! They told me it was first come, first served, on the machines! So sad! There are many more reasons I would not have a baby here. I am pregnant again and plan on going back to the states for this birth also. Let me know if you have found else out about doulas, midwives, or homebirth here in Kingston. I'd be interested to know the alternatives. Thanks!
