Algeria: Education In Algeria for Kids:
Hi Omar,
I have read your discussions about education for your kids in Algeria. I do understand your concerns. We moved from London to Algiers about 4 years ago with quite young children. The reason why we moved here was because my husband had been offered a job. We are not expats and are both Algerians. My children go to a private school where French and Arabic are tought.
From our experience, I can say that I would discourage you to come to Algeria and Algiers in particular if you don't have insured regular incomes or big savings. Cost of living in Algiers is quite high. It is obvious that your kids will have to go to a private school. Public schools won't be "good enough" if I may say so, considering that you re used to the UK education system. Here, it will be back to basics! Therefore, you ll need to anticipate these costs plus others (accommodation, car, food and all basic needs).
I know that life in the UK can be a struggle but at least you can get your basic needs covered (accommodation + food). Bear in mind that there s no social cover here (no job seeker allowance, no housing benefit and a very poor healthcare system ...).
To sum it up, life in Algeria can be nice and enjoyable but you re gonna need good money for that. Otherwise the dream can turn into a nightmare !
Private schools in Algeria are run like businesses. They are everything but charities. No money means no private education. If you can't afford private schools fees, people will only feel sorry for you ! I am not talking about the quality of teaching, as I haven't experienced it myself.
I am sure that there s plenty of examples of people who decided to come back home and experienced very difficult times because they didn't anticipate all these changes from the UK system. The big difference in Algeria with the UK is that you have no safety net.
In any case, I do wish you and your familly good luck and would be happy to help if needed.

Algeria: moving back to algeria:
Hi Kamel,
My husband and I lived for about 10 years in London and moved to Algiers about 2 years ago.
We have 2 children aged 4 and 6.
We came here because my hisband was offered a job.
Here are a few comments on life here in Algiers: life is very expensive (everyday goods except maybe food, although meat is expensive, housing is very expensive, good quality clothes...). On top of that, you will have to decide if you want your kids to go to a private school or go to a public one. Considering the low qulity of education in most public schools here, you might decide to go private. Our kids both go to a school that costs us 8000 Dinars a month for each and 15000 pour frais d inscription each year.
Ideally, before going there you will have sorted your accomodation and transport because you do need a car there.
You did not say if your wife was from Algeria or foreign because it might not be easy for her to adapt if she is not algerian.
Enough from me, do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further information.

Algeria: Imminent move to Algiers:
Hello,
I am a french algerian woman, mother of 3 little girls, married to an algerian man. My husband has been offered a job in Algiers and we have decided to take on the adventure. We met in London about 10 years ago where we both lived and worked until recently. Now, a new page is opening for our familly. My husband has started work there a few weeks ago and I should join him with the girls in August.
I am a bit apprehensive as for what life will be there on a daily basis but overall excited.
I would like my girls to go to pre shool preferably in french and I would love working as well. I have worked in London as a project manager for 5 years.
I was surprised reading about so many people going back to live in Algeria. I speak english and french and would love to converse, communicate with women in a similar situation or only interested in our experience.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards

Algeria: Positive Experiences in Algeria:
Hi Mahdiyhah,
I went through this post and thought your experience was very interesting and positive. We ve live 10 years in London and settled in Algiers last summer. Although my kids and husband seem to have adjusted, I find it a bit difficult to get used to my new life.
My familly in law is quite protective and prefers i go out with my husband. I am convinced that working will allow me to adapt much quicker and enjoy the country.
I know that you work and are quite independant, which I admire ! Is there a way we could communicate about work and other things via emails ?
Thanks for getting back to me
