South Africa: Retirement Income Requirement:

Hi, depends on how comfortable you would like to retire. A decent and comfortable home to purchase could set you back from $100k t0 $200k, a standard 1.6 litre motor vehicle from $15 to $25k( a decent 4X4 SUV around $40k), and comfortable monthly living expenses for a couple, about $2-4K a month, with k=1000.

South Africa: Weekends away:

Hi there, lots of places. This all depends also if you want to stay overnight in some places. The west coast is amazing, lovely nature reserve 2 hours from Cape Town, and in the same direction is a well known fossil park, amazing fossils still in their original state. Many wine farms with attractions for children too near Stellenbosch. Up the south coast just off the N2 national route at Gordons Bay is my idea of the most beautiful scenic drive in africa, this goes from Gordons Bay to Betty's Bay, and beyond to Hermanus. Then lastly you can do the world renown penisula drive to the southern tip which is very beautiful too. Enjoy.

South Africa: Is this salary enough...:

Good day, if this is your gross then I am afraid you may struggle a bit, but if it is your nett income then it is possible. The cheapest rental accomodation in a gated community is in the Strand or Gordons Bay which is 60 kms from Cape Town, there is bus and rail transport available if you do not have a vehicle. There are 2 bed room flats in Gordons Bay for around R3500.00/month, but make sure you have a good credit record. If you have no furniture there are many reasonably priced second hand shops available. You could also find sigle roomed furnished accomodation in Gordons BAy, check on Gumtree. Hope this helps.

South Africa: Hoping to live and work in cape town-:

Hi there, we have just re-located to the Cape from Durban, Kwa- Zulu Natal and my wife is in the teaching profession and many times she has said to me that it is a pity she never completed her phsychlogy degree as there seems to be many reasonable paying Jobs in the cape area. Working for the state/government you may never get wealthy ,but I do believe you would live very comfortably. Rental for good accommodation a half an hours drive from the city centre is good. Good luck.

South Africa: Want to Move:

Hi, I am living in Durban, KZN, up the east coast of South Africa but have a little knowledge of the Cape. Depends what you're looking for, you could live in a low cost house with the poor or a mansion in upper class, or anywhere in between. Visit www.gumtree or www.myhelderbrg and you will find propety right through the range. Goodluck.

South Africa: Power converters:

RE: Power converters. Hi there, Unless your tools are very special, I recommend you arrive without them because the cost to get a converter may be over the top and it is relatively cheap to buy a large range of tools and good tv's in South Africa. Our rand is cuurently +- R7.70 to $1.00. One could buy a good quality 13mm( 1/2inch) chuck 2 speed hammer drill and a set of drill bits for well under a $100. You may even end up paying half price at a reputable second hand/ used tool outlet. Hope that helps.

South Africa: move to Durban from UK:

Hi, if you're moving to Durban I'm sure that you will find it great, that is if your partner is a nice and outgoing person. There is so much to do here and it is really a cosmopolitan seaside city, but please stick to the unwritten rules of visiting an african country, always be aware of your surroundings and don't wander off the unbeaten tracks. Try not to wear visible jewellry and purses etc;. There are many places to meet people and make friends. God be with you and take care.
