Australia: moving back with my u.s. husband:

I am an Australian citizen but I have not been there since I was 3 years old. That was 26 years ago. I am assuming that there will be no problems for me to move back with my u.s. husband. I have asked the immigrations office and they can not give me an answer and advised me to just go ahead and apply for a visa for him. We are thinking about moving to Darwin. Can anyone give me some info about that city. No one in this forum seems to want to move there. Why? We both want to work and go to school there. Thanks
