Kazakhstan: are you an native speaking English teacher in Almaty?:

If you are an English teacher in Almaty, native of US, UK, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand and you need some work, contact me. I'm an English teacher at a local University and I'm getting swamped with calls for private lessons and work from various departments. Until they can clone me, I need some people to refer the work to. Drop me a line.

Kazakhstan: Wanting to find work in Kz.:

Where are you from originally? (US or UK?) and where are you coming to in KZ? You are in for some culture shock for sure. I'm an American who has been here for 1 1/2 years. I suggest to take a quick course in being a TESOL teacher. There is a ton of work teaching English here and if you are a native speaker, you can get plenty of private for cash students as well. I would then suggest you also send your credentials to KIMEP in Almaty if you are going to be in Almaty. Your international relations background may interest them as they have these programs there and every course in the university is taught in English accept courses in the subjects of the foreign languages that they teach there.

Kazakhstan: looking for a space to rent for...:

my martial arts school/self defense class. My class is growing and will outgrow the space being provided for me by KIMEP. I'm looking for a space that is somewhere around 200 square meters or more. Something like a basement or warehouse type space would be great, but it needs to be ventilated and hopefully have a little heat for the winter time. I would like to be able to access it during all hours of the day, because I would like to expand to teaching martial art courses six days per week. I would like to be able to hang boxing bags and other training equipment and of course would like for it to be secure so I can leave and store equipment there during non working hours without fear of burglary. Last request, that it be in the $1000 or less per month range. Anybody know of any space that might work?

Kazakhstan: Nice places to go out?:

What kind of music do you like? If you like the classic rock of Mad Murphy's you can try Soho and Guns and Roses. If you like latin music try Coba Cabana, and for loud thumping club type music Chicago is a pretty good place. Thats about my limit of knowledge of local spots. GNR and Soho are going to have more expats and the other two will have more locals. On a side note, being two women here, if you are looking for a self defense/martial arts class, I teach one. I'm an American so the classes are taught in English. Good luck with your search for places to go out.

Kazakhstan: moving to atyrau for work:

I can answer about the laptop part of your question. If you bring your computer with you in your luggage or carry on, you will have no problem. I brought a laptop with me in and out of KZ twice, no problems. Shipping one in is a headache. I shipped my big desktop to myself and spent the better part of two weeks getting it through customs (paying for storage every day on it).

Kazakhstan: rattan in Almaty:

This may seem like an odd inquiry but I'm wondering if anyone knows where I might get pieces of rattan in Almaty? I am teaching self defense courses and part of the course is elements of Filipino Martial Arts. Rattan is the preferred stick to use in the practice of these arts and I had taken for granted how easy it was to get in the US. I haven't found a place to get it in Almaty. Martial Arts supply shops would have it but sometimes the better source was rattan furniture stops where they would sell nice pieces of it that I could cut down into sticks of any size. I haven't been able to find anything like this in Almaty. Does anybody know of a shop that makes rattan furniture? Possibly someone who imports good regularly from China, Indonesia, or the Phillipines who might be able to ad some rattan to their orders?

Kazakhstan: Almaty for three months:

To get food for a little less you should try the Green Bazaar for vegetables and meat. I've also found that a market called Small on Mendekulova near the Ramstore in Samal-2 has good prices on grocery items. You can also try getting bulk items at Magnum on Abai corner Momyshuly, the prices are decent.

Kazakhstan: self defense course:

An American Expat martial arts expert in Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee's Martial Art) is offering an ongoing self defense course at KIMEP in Almaty for those interested, espcially with the rising crime rate. I can email the details to anybody who is interested

Kazakhstan: Canadians in Almaty:

What kind of work are you looking for?

Kazakhstan: expat publications:

I'm looking to teach some martial arts/self defense courses when I get to Almaty. Does anybody know if there are publications that expats regularly read there that I could advertise in?
