Philippines: dangerous or safe in the Philippines?:

When in Manila you must definately keep your wits about you......act smart......and be strong but friendly......For 5 years I explored every corner of this city.....wandered sober and half drunk down dodgy roads and shared redhorse and karaoke with locals in some of the poorest and roughest areas.....I never had a single problem or saw any bad attitude......we shopped in Baclaran and Divisoria markets at 2am and never got harrassed or felt uneasy........the worst hassle I ever had was being hassled to share some tambay of beer or brandy with locals on the street while being called Joe..... Never drop your guard.....dress for your environment.......and never act more important than the people around you........Philippines might be dangerous butI feel more scared walking past pubs at closing time in UK or Australia.....

Philippines: Finding accomodation in cavite:

Hi..... I have been living in Bacoor, Cavite for 6 years. I have just moved to Australia for a job hiwever I still keep my home in Cavite. I have rented many houses. Each one with 3 bedrooms and 2 bath ...... kitchen and living areas. Small gardens and decent gated garages. I always left the car outsude and bought a load of palms to make a tropical bbq oasis in garage area. The cheapest home I rented in Molino 3 was 4000 peso a month and most expensive was 7000 in Buhay Na Tubig. Use Sulit.com.ph and lookmin areas like bacoor, molino, meadow wood, bayanan. To be honest I found all my 5 rentals over the years by finding private ads on traffic poles in the area. If you want more assistance email me at stuart.marine@yahoo.com. Cavite is definately best place to live..... Stuart

Philippines: Entering Phil without visa from consulate in U.S:

lts the same world over. They dont care on your intentions only on your visa. if you enter as Visitor then your treated as visitor until you get new visa

Philippines: UK Immigration for Children born in Philippines....:

Has anyone had any issues with regards children born in Philippines and relocating to the UK. I recently had twin girls born in Dasmarinas. I am now trying to relocate my family to Scotland and it is a nightmare. I tried to apply for UK passports in Manila however I been told that due to the Divorce laws in Philippines, and the fact that my Filipinopartner was married for 6 months back in 2000 then the children are not legally my children but actually her ex-husbands......This is crazy.... Does anyone have much experience dealing with these issues... Stuart

Philippines: 16 month exit:

Hi all Just to inform you. I was in Philippine for 7 months on last visit. I was only holding the tourist visa extending every month. When I left in June Immigration asked me to pay 2000 plus peso in additional taxes as they said any stay over 6 months results in this additional tax. So actually its 6 months not 12. Don't know if this is new rule. It was my first time over 6 months. Stuart

Philippines: Villages vs. Fort?:

Both have there advantages and I would say it really depends on firstly, where you will be working and secondly what type of experience you hope to take away from Philippines. The FORT is a beautiful area where the modern skyscraper apartments loom over starbucks and GAP and other trendy establishments. The weekend sees the young influential Filipinos and western expats mingling in world class nightclubs and the children attend schools based on foreign education systems paying school fees that make UK and Australia look cheap for private education.....It says everything when jeepneys and tricycles are banned from this area.....But it is safe....its is clean and it is full of expats.... Now outside of Manila or on edge of city in a more village or suburban setting you have a different life. The place may not look so clean on surface and you may not feel so safe at first sight (note that is only feel so safe...actually in many cases you could be safer) but it will have an atmosphere that yells ASIA and especially Philippines. The gated communities are not compounds but simply subdivisions with additional security measures and restricted access in place funded by the residents. The people will be more local and more your average Filipino. They will be more community spirited and will be generally more friendly. You will be accepted and taken in within minutes of settling in area and although you always keep on your toes and never really trust anyone, the people will look out for their neighbours and will give great help anyway they can pending the circumstances. The schools in Philippines can be good its just a little extra work sifting through the crap to find the good ones. If you live out of Manila and live a more simple lifestyle, you can still live in a comforatable western fashion in a more local community spirit on a fraction of the costs of the FORT. I live in Bacoor, only 20km south of the FORT and I would not live anywhere else.....I have cows pulling carts up the main road in town....I have small but fast disappearing rice fields behind our homes and I am only 15 minutes from Mall of Asia if the traffic is OK. The people are friendly and excellent and hospitable neighbours and I live with all the comforts and mod cons that any Australian needs and wants. So it really depends on what you want to take away from your Philippines experience....You could live in Fort and work in Makati and never even realise your outside Australia or Singapore in many ways. Hope that gives my opinion Stuart

Philippines: Time to venture away for a while......:

Hi all..... After 5 years in Philippines it is time to take my family overseas for a few years. We will be back but I want them to see what is outside just like I am doing here....... So that means I have to get rid of stuff and I didnt know if it is OK to advertise on here but I thought someone might be interested especially any new arrivals...... I am selling pretty much a full household of stuff from beds and cupboards to pots and pans.....all items are available at reasonable offer.......Not great quality I will admit just your normal standard. We also have a 8 seater Toyota Van......Toyota Lumida 1997.....Its for sell for 150 000 peso. I have a mountain bike, from UK, for 5000 peso......a racing bike for 10 000 peso and a 9 foot surfboard for 6000 peso......all in good condition..... My wife also has a few LV bags and wallets she is selling all around 5000 to 10000 price.... If you are interested then let me know and we can get in touch........

Philippines: Moving to Fort:

Hi..... I have 3 kids under 2.....and Philippines is a great place. There are so many character building things that I think will be beneficial for the kids. The lifestyle here and the people will help the kids learn a more community minded spirit than western nations give. Additionally they should learn to respect money and possessions more and respect the good thin gs in life that we often take for granted in western world. Dont shelter them too much. Let them get out and experience it. Meet local kids and mingle. The Fort is a very safe neighbourhood and is probably one of best places to live for foreigner inall Philippines. that said I would never want to live there. Dont be shy from living in a more local area. The gated subdivisions in other areas including Cavite, where I live, are safe and relaxing and allow you to eixperience the Philippines, meet the average people and generally get a real sense of Filipino life. Yes you do trade that for a few of the normal luxuries we enjoy but it depends where your preference lies is it a life will all luxuries and mod cons or a genuine experience and wonderful friendships and a real sense of happiness. Philippines has a bad reputation and YES you do need to take care and keep that eye in back of your head open however treat everyone with respect, smile and show friendship to people and try best to blend in (as good as a white person can) and you will not have any problems. I been here 5 years.....Live in local area out of Manila and have partied, explored and frequented some of the worst areas in Manila and I have never had a single problem not even had someone say anything unfriendly...... I feel safer walker the dark streets at night in some bad areas in Manila than I ever feel back in Australia or UK...... To answer your question about shopping........Philippines is a catholic country and an abundance of teenage pregnancies.......Not a day goes by you will not see pregnant women and new families.....so that means they have lots of babies stuff.......All supermarkets sell everything just like back home......All big brands have stores in Makati and Mall Of Asia but then all the markets sell either fake copies or simply cheap brand baby products all at good prices........we buy packs of babies sleeping clothes all long leg pants and singlet tops in packs of 10 all printed with animals or cars etc......for less than 100 peso in Baclaran. markets (thats 2.50 USD). So dont worry at all.....>We had twins here last September and it has been no problem...... OK I said enough. Just remember dont believe everything you hear.....Take care at all times and try and blend in to your surroundings and smile and be friendly and you will love the Philippines..... Stuart
