Hi Gem Try outsourcing companies. There are a few in the UK that you can earn an ok wage for audio typing for numerous law firms and you will be paid in £ which helps.

Jamaica: return flight required:

Hi Nicenurse I have booked mine for six months before and had no problems either at the airport or getting an extension.

Jamaica: how to find rentals in jamaica:

Hi Meloney Here are a few links that you may find helpful:- http://www.vlarealtors.com/listings.aspx http://www.cbjamaica.com/nmcms.php?snippet=properties&p=propsearch http://propertyadsja.com/ Also Gleanner classifieds are very helpful.

Jamaica: Moving from Canada to Jamaica:

Hi Spicegyal, As you are not a citizen of Jamaica, you will get a maximum 3 month stamp in your passport on entry to Jamaica. This can be extended by going to Immigration offices in Kingston or Mobay and you will get a further 3 month extention. So in all you can stay on the island for 6 months. You will not be able to work. You can only work with a work permit usually obtained by your prospective employer. If either of your parents or grandparents are Jamaican you can apply for citizenship through them. Otherwise through marriage. Regards

Jamaica: Canadian looking for advice on Moving to Jamaica:

Hi Rolo As far as I am aware, you will need your itinerary to state a return flight for passing through immigration at the airport in Jamaica. As you will be married to a Jamaican you can apply for residence in Jamaica by submitting the required documentation at offices in Kingston or Mobay. Or better still, phone the Jamaica High Commission in Canada and see if it can be sorted before you leave. As far as I am aware, though please correct me anyone if I am wrong, the granting of permanent residency does not automatically state the right to work so a work permit may still be required I have no knowledge re Canadian drivers licence. I have not had to deal with such matters I just use my drivers licence from UK. There are Scotia Banks in Jamaica, so you should be able to keep some ties in this regard.

Jamaica: UK Citizen Moving to Jamaica - Work??:

Welcome It seems to prove pretty difficult to get work, though not impossible. Also, more job opportunities seem to come up in Kingston. Any contacts you have, if any will be helpful. Try these site and best of luck. http://www.caribbeanjobs.com/ http://www.splashjamaica.com/

Jamaica: UK moving to JA - looking for advice on marriage/visas/housing/everything!:

Hi Lola If you are not married on entering JA you will get a 3 month stamp in your passport as a visitor and this can be extended just before the 3 months is due to expire by going to immigration offices in Kingston or Mobay. The cost is $10,000 JA dollars (about £75) and they will extend it for another three months so you will get 6 months in total. I think in any commonwealth you will get 6 month stay. The only other way you can stay indefinitely is if one of your parents or grandparents is Jamaican and you can achieve dual citizenship this way by taking their birth certificate etc. Otherwise, if you were to find a job in JA (which are hard to come by) your employer will apply for a work permit for you and then there are no limitations apart from possibly when your employment ceases with that company. Re housing properadsja.com is a good site on which private landlords post otherwise http://www.vlarealtors.com/listings.aspx or century21jm.com or http://www.cbjamaica.com/ or the Sunday Gleaner classified. The Gleaner will be the cheaper as they are private individuals advertising. I hope this helps

Jamaica: New to Jamaica:

Hi Nads, A lady called Dale has an expat blog http://transitionsunshine.info/ which is very helpful and you can send her an e-mail from there and she will reply on how to get in contact with the groups you mention. I hope all is going well for you so far. I also live in Kingston. Send me an e-mail if you like and I will see if I can be of any assistance or just for a contact.

Jamaica: Expat Groups in Kingston:

Hi Does anyone know of any expat groups in Kingston as I am interested in meeting other expats. I know where is supposed to be one for women in Kingston but I have e-mailed them to ask to be added to their mailing list months ago and have received no reply. Are there any others? Thanks

Jamaica: Jobs for Wife of Jamaican Man:

I have been in Kingston, JA for six months now and researched and applied for jobs before coming here but to no avail. Understandably, I imagine jobs go to Jamaicans first but I think it is also a lot about not just what you know but who you know. Nothing is impossible so to try is all you can do. Keep a look out on websites while in the UK for hotel/resort and try and network best you can. Once you are married you will have citizenship so it will make the work process a lot easier as you would not need to go through the hassle of work permits. Alternatively you could see what online jobs are available to you from companies in the UK.
