Advice for New Expats

Be sure to read the various articles posted to this website, as well as others that are available for free online. If you are planning a move, rest assured, someone else had blazed a trail to your travel destination and likely has written a report that you can read and benefit from. Remember to keep an open mind, as well as both eyes open during the time of your transition, act with due thought and deliberation and feel confident in your decision. From this foundation all that you will can only be something good for you and your family.

Greece: Athens Volunteers Needed For Oct. Gardening Event:

First Guerrilla Gardening Event to be Held on October 9th at 11 AM The Keramikos-Mataxourgeio Exemplary District seeks volunteers to help clear land and to plant vegetation on vacant land parcels for neighborhood beautification purposes. Our goal is to clear and to make use of all vacant plots in a way that will improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. The meeting point will be the corner of Lassonos and Leonnatou at 11 am (please call to verify time). There are three abandoned lots where the planting will take place. Anyone who would like to help can bring dirt (soil), shovel, garbage bags and gloves. Some plants will be donated by Andrew Clements (local plants indigenous to Greece), however, anyone who wishes to may bring his own plants. Some plant types we recommend include: geraniums, armparorizes, kallistimon, richosperma, pachyfylla, hibiscus, gazi, acacias. Best are plants that do not need much water and that grow easily. The first planting event will take place on October 9, 2010. Anyone interested in participating, either as an owner of empty land or as a volunteer gardener, is requested to call 69.558.04.992 and visit the websites listed below. http://www.kmprotypigeitonia.org/?p=news&id=guerilla-gardening http://metaxourgeio.wordpress.com/2010/09/18/guerilla_gardening/ http://www.atenistas.gr/?p=835

Italy: Obtaining Credit in Italy/Abroad:

Saluti Chiarles: This link will respond to some of your questions: http://www.doingbusiness.org/Exploretopics/gettingcredit/Details.aspx?economyid=96 Your best bet to start would probably be to work with your existing banking institution in the U.S. and then establish an account / credit in Italy. If you have a solid bank history in the U.S. that will doubtless benefit you, but since this is Italy / EU they have their own credit reporting system. Better to pay cash when you can, and to avoid having a car (cost / time trouble) if possible when you transition. You can ship a car with no import taxes if the car has been owned for more than one year. An option if the transportation cost does not prove prohibitive relative to the value of your vehicle. You can drive with your current license for one year and then would be required to obtain an Italian one. The Italian system is marked different than what one is use to in the States, thus, maintaining an account there to ease the transition is advisable. Good luck! SAI

Italy: Architectural work:

That depends on many factors. What is your situation? Do you have the legal right to live / work in Italy? Do you have enough money to purchase property and to live without working if you are retired? Why Montepulciano? Living in Italy can prove a wonderful experience or an awful, depending on, of course, your situation, but not exclusively on this. The rule of law and fair play cannot be relied on in Italy. The police, at times, play the part of accomplice to those with money and power. By comparison, the local, state and federal government in the U.S. is highly responsive to the concerns of its citizenry and the police force fair and professional. Here in Italy much less so. Thus, if you can afford a home free and clear, find an agent to help you secure property and perhaps can contribute to the community in your professional capacity, your life in Tuscany might just prove dreamy.

Italy: Help Requested Finding Lavoro in Italy:

Ciao Amico, my name is Stefan and I am trying to transition from the U.S. to live in Italy with my Italian wife Chiara. My challenge is securing sustaining work in Italy to will enable me to support my wife and I while we pursue La Dolce Vita as it were. I am hoping to make connections here that will facilitate this aim. As you know, most things in Italy, and surely in most other countries too, work best when one has connections. My father was born in Bari, but all of his surviving famiglia reside in the U.S. So, I have a pocket full of niente and need your help to realize this dream of ours. Yes, I can send my CV to a hundred people, however, this practice is common and just makes me one of the many. I need to act in a more clever way than my counterparts, and know well this is accomplished through connections. I hope you will help me to make the right ones. Thank you for your time and assistance. A presto. Stefan Alessio
