Ecuador: Moving to Ecuador After College:

Don't want to sound discouraging but there just are not that many jobs available within the country. As a political science major you may have a shot at a position within the embassy in Quito or the consultate in Guayaquil. Of course there are American companies there but primarily in the hospitality industry, and English/Spanish speaking ability is crucial. You may also want to check out the various NGO organizations, non-profits, etc. Best wishes on your search.

Ecuador: Shipping your Car to Ecuador:

Ian: Having lived in Ecuador for a year in 2001 and having returned since that time occasionally, I have never found it necessary to have a car since taxis are inexpensive. Unlike the United States, drivers of cars involved in accidents in Ecuador could find themselves facing unbelievable financial burdens/criminal penalties if there are any injuries to an Ecuadorian, even if the accident was not your fault. (like paying for their support for years) Directional/Traffic signs are somewhat confusing or non-existent in some areas, and roads are rough in all but the larger cities and the highways. Best advice: Sell your car in the US before you arrive, and enjoy the taxis. and the drivers who can be your best friend as needed. On several occasions I would charter one for a half a day or day depending upon the location, number of people, etc. and we would have a great time not worrying about traffic, tickets, or getting lost.

Ecuador: 10 Tips for Living in Ecuador:

Betsy: Lots of good and true advice from Marco above. Best single piece of advice as a former resident for one year in Quito is to know some spanish before you get there or start learning fast. (immersion really helps) I have a website located here: http://mantarealestate.com which used to have active real estate listings when I was a broker there, but is now geared primarily with the travel aspects of Ecuador with many articles by persons who have traveled or lived there. Feel free to check it out, and send me an email if you have any questions or would like to write an article there to be published. I had some of the greatest experiences of my life as a resident there, and hope to someday return as a retiree.
