Bahamas: Cell service for call back to US.:

Cell phone choices are BTC or Aliv. You can check out their web sites for info. However, for call to USA, I suggest you purchase a magic jack. Then, download the app to your cell phone. I make calls to USA all day for free and receive them on my US number. Win-win.

Bahamas: Moving to Freeport grand Bahamas:

Greetings. If you have read a few of the past posts on employment, you probably already have the ghist. First, employment has to be obtained before coming to the island. What I mean is, you can't apply for a work permit on your own. Only your future employer can apply for your work permit. its a grey area about being here and looking for work under a tourist visa, all depends on who processes your paperwork. Work closely with your employer on this one. Medical jobs should be easy to look for. Always a shortage, contact one of the local Doctors that you already have a relationship with and see if they can point you in the right direction for openings. Construction might be an issue. The law states that you can only get a work permit if you can prove no Bahamian can do your job. And, since there is no licensure requirement or standards for construction workers, everyone here is a construction worker. Best bet would be to contact a local construction company that isn't run by a Bahamian and see what they suggest. Or start your own company with a Bahamian majority owner. (That would be a whole different post : ). Hope this is helpful. If you need more specifics, pm me. Have a great day.

Bahamas: Real estate price drop:

Princess Isle is well. Most of the properties there didn't suffer damage. I live on GBI and could send you pics if you let me know what you are interested in. Other areas suffered damage but most of the better built homes did well. Hope that helps.

Bahamas: Teachers moving:

Breija: Just want to correct you, there are lots of private schools. Abaco has two that I know of, Eleuthera has Island School and another one I can't remember the name of at the moment. To the original person: Crime isn't close to the level of Jamaica (we lived there previously as well). You will feel much safer here (especially if you lived in Kingston or MoBay). I can't look at the original post, but did you say which Island you were looking to live on? Breija is correct in that you have to apply for jobs and so on before you can move here, but it is good to visit the island you are considering and see what is available to you. If you are looking to teach as your full-time, support the family, career, you will definitely need to apply with one of the private schools. GBI has a few of them, Lucaya is the IB school (best pay if you have the credentials to work in an IB program), Sunland Baptist, Mary Star of the Sea, Alpha-Omega, there are a few more that I am not recalling at this moment. But, the government schools do hire expats, there is a teacher shortage in the Bahamas. But, there is no advancement opportunity as the upper-level is restricted to Bahamians. https://www.ministryofeducationbahamas.com/careers-at-moest The job listings will state if they are open to foreigners or only Bahamians. I think that the best thing is to come and experience the place, look at the educational offerings, and then decide if this is the right move for your family. Hope this is helpful, if I can provide you with any more info, let me know. Blessings.

Bahamas: Canadian Wishing for More Info:

Hello there and welcome to the boards. First, I would suggest reading the different posts others have put on this topic here. Most of what you are asking is covered. Also, do your own research: bahamas.gov.bs is a great place to start. Second, your skills would really determine where the best place to find a job would be. Also, have you been to the Bahamas? This would help you identify which of the Islands would suit your tastes best. As a work permit is only granted through your employer after you already have a job offer, the ground work of finding out where jobs are available and in what industries, really begins by approaching those specific companies that you might have the skills to work in and see if they are hiring. The drawback to work permits, you can only get one if no one in the Bahamas is able to do your job. Specialized skills are the easiest to get permits for. Last, a lot of people will give you a heap load of negatives why it can't be done, but if you are ready to work at it and be patient in the process, it is possible. Hope that is heplpful.

Bahamas: US Dollar:

Still accepted, 1:1. Enjoy your trip??

India: Clothing Choices:

Greetings. Thanks to anyone who answers my questions. My son is coming to India during Monsoon season to work on a documentary. The 'prep' company that is advising them is less than helpful in what is best to wear during this time. Being expats ourselves, we came right to the source. He will be outdoors the majority of the work day and would like to use most of his baggage for equipment. What are the best shoes (sandals, hiking, etc) for that time of year and what is the best type of clothing to wear. Again, thanks for all who respond. Be Blessed.

Bahamas: Safety Concerns/Toddler Activties:

Hope I can answer some of your questions. First, safety on GBI isn't something you need to worry about other than the normal living in a city safety things. Walking with your baby and going to the park should be fine, but of course that depends on where you are. Just like any city there are good spots and bad, avoid the bad and you will love GBI. Second, neighborhoods are really dependent on the amount of money you want to spend on housing. I am sure that your husbands company probably has good suggestions on where their execs reside and could help with that one. Don't have any toddlers myself so can't help with that one. But if you need any other questions answered, I'd be more than happy to help you out.

Bahamas: stores on Grand Bahamas:

No Target or Walmart. We have local drug stores that are stocked pretty similar to a major drug store in the USA. Have you visited here before?

Bahamas: Furniture - bring or buy on location?:

Welcome to GBI! There are some fabulous furniture stores here on GBI. It all depends on your style and what you are looking for. At Dolly Madison, they have a Rooms to Go showroom. You can buy off the floor or Andrea will order in for you anything that is on the Rooms to Go web site. Also, they sell name brand appliances. Furniture Plus sells Ashley Furniture and Name Brand Appliances. Then there is my personal favorite, The Home Center. It has a mixture of Higher end brands, like Bassett and Broyhill. Plenty of options for buying local and I have found the prices aren't really that bad compared to all the hassle of bringing stuff in. Best thing to do is look local first, then see what you would pay for the same thing in the US/UK with the shipping rate and customs/VAT. Good Luck with your shopping. If you need anymore info, let me know.
