Laos: need some advise:

Yes, BCEL does and I think Phonsavahn bank will shortly. Not sure about ANZ. You don't need a Lao licence, but it is a good ideato get one. Only costs 100,000 kip for a year. Regarding bars, try Kop Jai der or Borpenyang.

Laos: Expat residency visa:

No there is not. The only possible suggestion would be that you get a work permit and visa in Laos. This is possible, but would cost you a bit for a "fixer". You do realise, I suppose, that you can extend your 30 day visa.

Laos: pediatrician in Vientiane?:

Pediatrician? There are Lao pediatricians at the Mother Child hospital. The French Embassy has a clinic here to which many expats go. The health care at this clinic is pretty good. They also have family plans that you can sign up for on a yearly basis. Nong Khai and Udon are not that far away. Not sure whether yanks can go to the Aussie clinic, but the French clinic is cheaper.

Laos: Considering a move with spouse and a 9mth old:

We have a 7 month old. You can get everything you want here, pampers, formulas, pushers etc etc. Regarding getting a job. I was going to say very difficult, but then I noticed your spouse has had work with NGO's before. What sort of work? That would certainly help. It does help to be on the ground as many jobs are word of mouth.

Laos: Teaching position wanted:

Hi. Without meaning to sound nasty: Teaching for "a few months" is doing your students a great disservice. You would need to commit to a school for a year or a minimum of 6 months. Secondly, do you have teaching qualifications? Have you taught before. We frequently see people want to earn money and the think teaching is an easy option. It is not and unless you are experienced, particularly in ESL, again you are doing students a disservice. Having said this, even if you have teaching qualifications, it is not easy to get a job in Laos unless you are actually here. Should you want to work, I suggest you come and approach the language schools and see what is available. I can tell you now that the pay will be poor.

Laos: everyday costs for living in laos:

Stevie, I am sorry to be blunt, but that is a ridiculous question. I might as well ask "How much is the cost of living in NY? It depends. What sort of acommodation do you want - anywhere from $USD150 to 4000pm. What and where do you like to eat? What do you like doing at night? Do you have a car, a bike or nothing?

Laos: teaching in Laos:

The Vientiane Times only very rarely has job ads. Best is to write to the schools here directily setting out your wquaklifications. You won't really get anything without teaching qualifications.

Laos: 10 Tips for Living in Laos:

I disagree strongly that cars are cheap in Laos. Quite the opposite - cars retain their value and are very expensive. Be careful buying a car as many Lao do not service their vehicles at all.
